Assessing The Athletic’s Robert Covington trade for Milwaukee Bucks

The lunacy behind The Athletic’s Robert Covington trade for Milwaukee Bucks
There is not too much lunacy for the Bucks in this trade. They might be hesitant to trade away DiVincenzo, but given the ample amount of talent they have at the position with names such as Wesley Matthews, Grayson Allen, and Pat Connaughton, the Bucks should be more willing. As for Hill, trading him would leave Milwaukee without a backup point guard, which is a situation that would be all too familiar, as they went through something similar last season. Yet, there would likely be avenues to explore via the buyout market to fill that void, making them more willing to include him.
The lunacy may come on Portland’s end when assessing Milwuakee’s trade proposal. After all, Portland traded away two first round picks to get the forward in the first place, and they might have some hesitancy to trade him in a package like this that does not include draft capital at all. DiVincenzo could be a nice piece for them, but would the Blazers want to potentially pay him after the season? It is questionable, given that they already have an abundance of guards on the roster in Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum, Norman Powell, and Anfernee Simons. Adding yet another guard in DiVincenzo could get repetitive.
There are certainly better offers out there that the Blazers could likely get for Covington before the deadline. Some team out there will likely offer a first rounder in a package in an attempt to bolster their defense before a playoff run, and that would be more enticing than what the Bucks have to offer at this point in time. For Milwaukee, this would be a solid deal, while Portland may have their share of hesitancy about doing it.
