Wesley Matthews needs to turn things around post-All Star break for the Milwaukee Bucks

Obviously, this is nowhere near as important as Middleton turning things around is, but Wesley Matthews finding his shooting stroke to some degree would be pretty swell if I could be so bold.

Matthews had an absolutely scorching start to his second stint as a Buck, shooting 44 percent on nearly four attempts per game from 3 in his first 16 games. In his last 14 games, he’s shot 18 percent on around three attempts.

Here are a few not-so-fun facts from Matthews’ rough patch:

  • He’s made just three 3s in his last 10 games (3-of-22)
  • In those 10 games, he has the same amount of made free throws as made 3s
  • He’s made seven 3s in his last 14 games (38 attempts), he made seven 3s in his first six games (18 attempts)

It’s safe to say things are going poorly for the Wisconsin native!

With all of the uncertainty with the Bucks’ wing depth through trades and injuries, Matthews has a big opportunity to earn a spot in the playoff rotation but it all depends on his shooting. Everyone who has watched Matthews knows he can still defend at a high level (when he’s not being asked to guard Deandre Ayton), but that doesn’t matter if he shoots like this.

I’d be surprised if his slump continues through the final 22 games, but I also didn’t think it would last the 14 games that it has. Like Middleton, Matthews will benefit from the break to get a chance to reset and rest.

Maybe adding DeAndre’ Bembry will light a fire under Matthews, but that’s not really how shooting works. But if he starts shooting better, we can say that was the reason, I guess.
