The Milwaukee Bucks will need a bigger performance from Giannis Antetokounmpo

If stopping Young is priority number one for the Milwaukee Bucks, then getting Giannis Antetokounmpo easier looks en route to him having a more efficient scoring night against the Hawks is number two.

Antetokounmpo has certainly not been bad against the Hawks this year, he just hasn’t been the dominant force that we know he can be. He’s averaging 26.5 points (not bad!) but on 50.5 percent true shooting and 43.9 percent effective field goal rate (not good!) in two games against the Hawks.

He’s been held to 45.5 percent on 2-point attempts, which is over 15 percent lower than his season average on 2s.

The Hawks do have a fair amount of big bodies that they can throw at Antetokounmpo in Clint Capela, John Collins, and Onyeka Okongwu. Here’s how he’s done against each on 2-point attempts:

  • Capela: 7-of-12 (58.3 percent), two shooting fouls, no turnovers
  • Collins: 4-of-7 (57.1 percent), two shooting fouls, four turnovers
  • Okongwu: 2-of-10 (20 percent), three shooting fouls, three turnovers

Antetokounmpo has had no problem getting to the line against these guys, but it’ll be great if he can finish those shots at or around the basket.

He’s had a few traditionally tough matchups for him recently in the Miami Heat and Phoenix Suns, which he had varying degrees of success in. The Hawks are another team that has given him a bit of trouble this season, but I wouldn’t be shocked at all if he came out and had a big night in this one.
