Grayson Allen is quietly thriving in his role for the Milwaukee Bucks lately
By Dalton Sell
Anyone that has watched the Milwaukee Bucks this season has had to of noticed just how easily Grayson Allen transitioned into his role after coming aboard in an offseason trade. Being named a starter from day one, Allen quickly found success due to the lethal combination of electric 3-point shooting and an abundance of wide-open attempts. Though Allen has put up the best numbers of his career all season long, he has particularly looked comfortable following the All-Star break.
Assessing Grayson Allen’s play with the Milwaukee Bucks post-All-Star break
In 10 games following the All-Star break, Allen is averaging 9.5 points while shooting 50 percent from the floor and 46.9 percent from 3-point range in 25.2 minutes per game. While his scoring numbers are down compared to what they were before the break, Allen’s shooting efficiency is through the roof, and it is clear to see why.
Playing alongside reputable stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jrue Holiday, and Khris Middleton, Allen has received countless open looks on the offensive end this season. This has been the case especially following the All-Star break, as Allen has shot a scorching hot 20-of-34 (58.8 percent) on 3-pointers when given six or more feet of space, per NBA.com/stats. Allen’s 20 makes in this 10-game span are the fifth most in the league on “wide-open” looks, showing how productive he has been on the offensive end as of late when given these looks.
Tying into Allen’s ability to capitalize on these countless wide-open looks is his ability to let it fly without even thinking twice. When he gets that pass from Antetokounmpo, Holiday, or whoever else, Allen understands his role as Milwaukee’s catch-and-shoot threat on the perimeter. This is working great for him lately as Allen is shooting 18-of-39 (46.2 percent) on such attempts since returning from the All-Star break. He has thrived in that role all season, but his efficiency is up a step compared to where it has been previously. While confidence has never been an issue for the marksman, Allen has looked noticeably more comfortable with no hesitation lately offensively.
While Allen’s overall numbers are not the most eye-catching, that should not be a huge surprise, as he is the fifth scoring option in the starting five. Some would argue that Allen’s biggest flaw in his recent action has been his lack of aggressiveness at times, as they would like to see him hunt for shots more often rather than be too passive. While his numbers suggest that Allen that doing so might not be the worst idea, he is just letting the game come to him lately. When the looks are there, he will take them and oftentimes make them.
Shooting like this is why Allen could potentially be the biggest wild card for the Milwaukee Bucks down the stretch and into the playoffs. When teams inevitably wall off the paint to try and stop an onslaught in the post by Milwaukee, Allen will be waiting out on the perimeter for an open 3-point look. If he can hit them with some same consistency that he has been lately, he could be a sizeable difference-maker for this team. Right now, Allen is playing his role incredibly well, and that is what matters at this point in time with the regular season winding down and the postseason nearing.
Hopefully Allen can keep this recent momentum going down the line, as the Bucks will need him to produce.
