Two of the Milwaukee Bucks’ top assistant coaches, Darvin Ham and Charles Lee, have garnered significant interest in opposing team’s head coaching searches recently.
The pair have both been doing their rounds in the first cycle of interviews, but it looks like Ham has impressed enough to land a second interview. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Ham is scheduled to interview for a second time with the Charlotte Hornets, and he has now emerged as a “serious candidate” for the position. Both Ham and Lee have had interviews with Charlotte, and it appears that the former has a serious shot at landing the gig for his first NBA head coaching job.
Reactions to Milwaukee Bucks assistant Darvin Ham landing a second interview with the Charlotte Hornets
It has felt inevitable for weeks that Darvin Ham will land a head coaching position this offseason, the biggest question has been from which team. In addition to the Hornets, Ham had also done interviews with the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings. After that first round of coaching interviews, it seems safe to say that the Hornets are the frontrunner to land Ham’s services, and that is certainly interesting, given what the opportunity could present for a first-time head coach.
Out of all of the coaching positions Ham has been linked to this offseason, the Charlotte opening has been viewed as the most desirable. Not only are the Hornets led by a 20-year-old All-Star in LaMelo Ball, but they have a solid supporting cast that could make waves in the East for years to come if they get the right voice in the locker room. Ham has always been viewed as a great voice for the Bucks during his time as Mike Budenholzer’s top assistant, and he could be exactly who the Hornets need leading them nightly as a coach on the younger side of things himself.
Other candidates linked to the position have been Charles Lee, Mike D’Antoni, Terry Stotts, and a handful of other recognizable names in the coaching carousel. At the time of this writing, Ham is the only one on the record getting a second interview, and things appear to be tipping in his favor. A head coaching job for Ham is long overdue, and it currently looks like the Hornets could be the team to finally give him the well-deserved opportunity. The Lakers still have interest as they are still searching for their next head coach, and perhaps they will ramp up their pursuit following this news regarding Ham and the Hornets. Only time will tell on that front, but things are looking good for Milwaukee’s top assistant coach.
For now, best of luck with the second head coaching interview, Darvin!
Stay tuned to see how things pan out for Ham as he currently stands as a serious candidate to land the Charlotte Hornets head coaching gig. Right now, it feels inevitable that Ham will be on the sidelines for a lucky organization when the 2022-23 NBA season begins down the line.
