Potential replacement for Bobby Portis if he leaves the Milwaukee Bucks: TJ Warren

Another guy who has shown flashes but struggled with injuries, TJ Warren could offer a lot to the Bucks on a prove-it deal after only playing four games in the last two seasons. During the 2019-2020 season, and especially into the bubble, Warren played like a fringe All-Star. He averaged almost 20 a night on 61% true shooting, all while knocking down over 40% of his threes. Unfortunately, injuries derailed his next couple of years, so he was not able to build on that stellar stretch of play.

Although he hasn’t played very much recently, he would have a significantly smaller role with the Bucks, allowing him to ease his way back into the swing of things. Like Porter Jr., Warren’s size and length could help unlock the Bucks’ smaller lineups. Additionally, if he can return to somewhere close to his old self on offense, that would significantly lower the creative burden on the other Bucks stars, something that would be beneficial over a long season.

When you are up against the cap like the Bucks are, these are the types of risks you have to take. I wouldn’t be sitting here writing this article if it weren’t for the Bucks taking a risk on Portis, who showed significant promise but could never quite put it together. Knowing how heavily the Bucks weigh injury history, I would be surprised if they went this direction. However, given the upside and the relatively low cost, it is an option that should be considered.
