What should Goran Dragic’s role look like on the Milwaukee Bucks?
By Corey Moen
As of Friday afternoon, Goran Dragic will be a member of the Milwaukee Bucks for the remainder of the season, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Dragic previously was on the Chicago Bulls, where he played 51 games and averaged 6.4 points, 1.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists. So, with Dragic on the Bucks, what should the role be for him?
What should Goran Dragic’s role look like for the Bucks?
Throughout his career, Dragic has served as a starting point guard for the Phoenix Suns and Miami Heat and as a backup for the Houston Rockets, Toronto Raptors, Brooklyn Nets, and Chicago Bulls. In Milwaukee, Dragic will serve as a backup point guard.
Dragic adds an element to the Bucks that Jevon Carter doesn’t as a player who has experience setting up an offense and can get other guys involved. He is known as a true point guard, and Head Coach Mike Budenholzer values point guards who can get guys into their sets. That is why George Hill was on the roster for two stints; Budenholzer values veteran point guards who can run the offense, making Dragic a perfect fit.
This move is a long-time coming, as Milwaukee has been linked to Dragic for years because of his playmaking ability, and he’s been a Bucks killer for years.
With Dragic’s signing, Jevon Carter’s role will likely be diminished. Carter’s role on this team is to make open shots and pickup guys 94 feet with his bulldog-like defensive tenacity. Carter isn’t asked to set up the offense and be a shot creator, and you can get away with that in the regular season, but in the postseason, you need a veteran presence like Dragic, who is better suited for that role.
The addition of Dragic is massive for Milwaukee because this is a player who has a ton of postseason experience and has been a backup to Steve Nash, Kyrie Irving, and Jrue Holiday; this is a player who has backed up Hall of Fame point guards and a guy who accepts his role.
Building a championship team is about finding pieces that fit, and Goran Dragic was that missing piece to this championship puzzle. With Dragic in Milwaukee, I have no doubt the Bucks will be playing in June.
Stay tuned for Dragic’s eventual debut with the Bucks.
