3 Secret weapons that could come up big for the Milwaukee Bucks: Wesley Matthews

Wesley Matthews has not played a prominent role for the Bucks this season, having averaged just 15.6 minutes per game, which is a new career low. On top of that, the swingman has battled many injuries, specifically calf and hamstring issues. Despite all of that, there may be a role for him down the line, particularly in the postseason.

Matthews also did not play a prominent role for the Bucks during the regular season last year, but his importance skyrocketed when he became a starter right before the playoffs. Though the Bucks should make a lineup change with Jae Crowder as the fifth starter instead of Matthews this year, the veteran could still get quality minutes. Matthews’ defensive versatility is tremendous, as he is capable of defending multiple positions at a high level. Even at 36 years old, Matthews can still be an impact player on the defensive side of the ball while hitting some threes.

Right now, it seems like Matthews might be the forgotten man in Milwaukee’s rotation, but there is no doubt that Coach Budenholzer will find some time for him situationally. When the Bucks have a big scoring wing on the opposite side of the floor, the hope is that Crowder and Matthews could take turns playing physical defense on them. If Matthews can help the Bucks out in that regard, he could undoubtedly be a secret weapon for this team. He’s shown over the past year that he is still capable of playing outstanding defense when called upon, and the Bucks will put it to the test.
