10 stats you may not know about Bucks’ Bobby Portis’ double-doubles

One: Portis’ 38 double-doubles were good enough for 10th in the league this season, one behind Joel Embiid, who had 39, per Stathead Domantas Sabonis led the league with 65 double-doubles this season. Fellow Bucks player Giannis Antetokounmpo had 46 double-doubles this season, the fourth most in the NBA. Portis and Antetokounmpo were the only teammates in the top 10 for double-doubles in 2022-23.

Two: Bobby Portis’ 38 double-doubles this season are tied for the 18th most in a season by a Bucks player. Portis tied Andrew Bogut (2007-08) and Vin Baker (1995-96). Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has the most double-doubles by a Milwaukee Bucks player in a season with 78 in 1971-72. In fact, Abdul-Jabbar has the top six double-double seasons in this category.

Three: Portis now has 74 double-doubles in his three seasons with the Bucks. Those 74 are tied with Paul Pressey for the 10th most career double-doubles by a Bucks player. Abdul-Jabbar has the most career double-doubles in Bucks’ history with 431; Antetokounmpo is in second with 350.

Four: Portis had 23 double-doubles coming off the bench this season. That set a new Bucks’ record previously held by Greg Monroe with 13 in 2016-17.

Five: The 23 double-doubles by Portis coming off the bench this season were also the most in the NBA, per StatMuse. Russell Westbrook was the only other player in the league this season to have more than 10 double-doubles coming off the bench; he had 16.

Six: Portis’ 23 double-doubles coming off the bench this season is the 10th most in NBA history in a season. The single-season record for most double-doubles coming off the bench is 39, set by Jeff Ruland in 1981-82.

Seven: Portis took over the Bucks’ top spot for most career double-doubles by a player coming off the bench. He now has 31 such games in his Bucks’ career. Second on the list is Ersan Ilyasova, who had 21 double-doubles coming off the bench in his career with Milwaukee.

Eight: The NBA record for most career double-doubles by a player coming off the bench is 106 by Detlef Schrempf. Portis now has 58 career double-doubles coming off the bench in his eight-year NBA career. The 58 is tied for seventh most all-time with Jeff Ruland. Portis is one double-double short of the sixth spot held by Chris Gatling.

Nine: The Bucks’ record in the games this season when Bobby Portis had a double-double was 25-13. They were 10-5 in Portis’ double-doubles when he started the game and 15-8 in games when he got a double-double off the bench.

Ten: For the season, Bobby Portis averaged 14.1 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. He played 70 games this season, 22 as a starter and 48 coming off the bench. He became the third player in NBA history to average at least 14.1 points and 9.6 rebounds in a season with less than 25 starts (and a minimum of 41 games played). The others are Shawn Kemp and Detlef Schrempf, who each reached these numbers in 1981-82.

There is no denying that Bobby Portis had an excellent season and has been a major spark for the Bucks all season long.
