A pair of prominent names have surfaced in the Bucks’ coaching search
By Dalton Sell
The Milwaukee Bucks have begun assessing possible candidates for their head coaching position, having been granted permission for a handful of assistants league-wide.
While the front office had previously just been looking at assistants, a rumor was floating around from The Athletic’s Eric Nehm (Subscription required) that the team was also looking at currently employed head coaches. No names were given then, but it appears that two of them have been revealed. Per Yahoo! Sports’ Jake Fischer, Monty Williams of Phoenix and Tyronn Lue of LA are on Milwaukee’s radar as they sort through coaching candidates.
A pair of prominent names have surfaced in the Bucks’ coaching search
Neither of these names are overly surprising. Williams was among the candidates for the Bucks’ job back in 2018 before they hired Mike Budenholzer. The team clearly has an interest in him, so it makes sense that they are eyeing him once again. Lue is one of the best coaches in the NBA, so it’s a no-brainer for him to be on Milwaukee’s radar. The issue is that both of these coaches are still on their respective team’s payrolls, which would make it harder for the Bucks to acquire them.
Not only is Lue the better of the two coaches, but he’s also the best candidate that has been linked to the Bucks in their coaching search thus far. He’s an NBA champion who has plenty of experience when it comes to handling All-Star players such as LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard, and Paul George. Lue is also known as one of the best coaches in the game when it comes to making a pivotal change when needed in terms of adjustments, which is something Milwaukee needs badly after typically living and dying by their principles over the past few years.
Milwaukee’s net of coaching candidates has now caught seven names, including Lue, Williams, Charles Lee, Adrian Griffin, Scott Brooks, James Borrego, and Kenny Atkinson. More are bound to surface in the coming days and weeks, and it will be fascinating to see who the Bucks decide on.
