With the 58th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, the Indiana Pacers took Hugo Besson, who was quickly traded to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Besson played with the Bucks in Summer League, but rather than sticking around for the 2022-23 season, he was sent overseas. The guard spent the season playing for Metropolitans 92, where he shared the court alongside the consensus top pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Victor Wembanyama. It made sense for the Bucks to stash Besson overseas for a season, as it allowed him to develop his game and improve. Now, the Bucks should bring him over for the 2023-24 NBA season.

The Milwaukee Bucks should bring Hugo Besson aboard in 2023-24

One of the biggest issues for the Bucks over the past few years has been their inability to maintain steady production on offense, especially in the playoffs. A major reason for that could be due to an apparent lack of shot creators and scorers. Adding Besson to the roster would not solve that issue for the Milwaukee Bucks, but it could undeniably help them.

Besson’s biggest strength is his ability to score the basketball, which he showed this past season with Metropolitans 92. He averaged 12.6 points while shooting 50.8 percent from the floor, 35.6 percent from long distance, and 85.5 percent from the free throw line; those shooting splits were new career highs for the guard. Before this season, one of the biggest knocks on Besson was his shot selection and shooting efficiency, which are two things he clearly worked on improving.

Ultimately, it all boils down to the Bucks needing more shot-creators. It was evident last season that they knew this, as two players on their radar leading up to the 2023 NBA Trade Deadline were Fred VanVleet and Bojan Bogdanovic. With few tradeable assets and little to no spending money at their disposal, bringing Besson aboard is a cheaper and more realistic way to add a creator like Besson to patch a major hole on this roster for the asset-strapped Bucks.

Adding the recently turned 22-year-old Besson would also help address the Bucks’ need for more youth after having the oldest roster in the league this past season. Alongside MarJon Beauchamp and A.J. Green, he’d be a nice rotational piece to try and develop into something special. As a team with limited avenues when it comes to upgrading the roster, developing and getting production out of those three should be a prominent goal for newly appointed head coach Adrian Griffin, who specializes in player development.

Hugo Besson will almost certainly join the Bucks for the upcoming 2023 Summer League, and if he shines there, it should only increase his chances of him sticking around in Milwaukee.
