The Wisconsin Herd, the G-League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, have officially named the next head coach of the franchise ahead of the 2023-24 NBA season.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, NBA veteran Beno Udrih is set to become the Herd’s next coach. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because the guard played 98 games for Milwaukee in the early 2010s. The 41-year-old will now return to Wisconsin as a head coach and have a chance to work with some incredibly interesting youngsters with the Herd.

The Herd needed to get this hiring right. While the Bucks haven’t relied too heavily on their youth over the last few years, that is seemingly set to change this coming season. Newcomers such as Andre Jackson Jr., Chris Livingston, Jazian Gortman, and more will see time in the G-League, and they need someone to guide them to help their development as they aim to get their feet wet.

The G-League’s importance will be on full display for the Bucks next season. If Jackson, Livingston, or another Buck isn’t seeing prominent minutes, they can be assigned to the Herd to get reps. The team can also look to find some potential hidden gems for future use. For example, if Gortman is not on the opening night roster, it’d be nice to keep him around in case the team needs a guard.

Since 2020, Udrih has served as a player development coach with the New Orleans Pelicans, so he has experience helping players unlock their potential. The hope is that he’ll do that with the young Bucks as well. On top of that, he’s a two-time NBA champion as a player, so he’s got experience at the highest level when it comes to winning. It’ll be exciting to see what he can do as a head coach.

This isn’t an earth-shattering hire by any means, but it’s a solid one for the Wisconsin Herd, who should be extremely fun to watch next season and beyond.
