Following his 3-point barrage in the Milwaukee Bucks' win over the Brooklyn Nets, AJ Green suddenly has an opportunity to make history. With one game left to go, Green can surpass Ray Allen's franchise record for 3-pointers made in a season if he sinks three of them in the finale. A record that has stood for 24 years is suddenly on the line.
Green is having a sensational 3-point season
On the season, Green is shooting 42 percent from distance on seven tries per game. It hasn't been an entirely smooth ride for Green—who shot 34.7 percent from long distance in March and 34.8 percent in December—but for most of the year, the wing has been Milwaukee's safety blanket from deep due to his quick trigger and unmatched confidence, both of which are Ray Allen-like.
Sitting at 227 makes, Green is right behind Allen's 229. To put himself in this position, Green actually leapfrogged a pair of Bucks in Milwaukee's last game. Against the Brooklyn Nets, the wing knocked down 11 3-pointers en route to his 35-point night. In doing so, he surpassed Malik Beasley (224) and Damian Lillard (220), both of whom did it in 2023-24, on the Bucks' all-time list.
Not to take anything away from Green, but Allen's record is incredibly impressive because he buried that many triples in just 69 games in an era that wasn't as 3-point-heavy. If Green does it in the final game of the season, he will have played in 78. Beasley hit his mark in 79 games, while Lillard played in just 73. Ray Allen was certainly ahead of the times.
Green's rise with the Bucks has been storybook
No one thought Green would have reached these heights when the team first signed him out of the undrafted pool in 2022. He was a fine prospect due to his 3-point shooting, and there was hope that he could someday develop into a nice contributor. Now, he is banging down the door on one of the most impressive feats in Milwaukee Bucks single-season history.
History hasn't been made yet. Green will have one more game, a road outing against the Philadelphia 76ers, to leave his mark. If the wing follows up his career night with a worthy encore, he will etch his name into the history books. For a player who was fighting for a spot in the NBA just a few short years ago, it's a great story.
