AJ Green continues to grow as a key piece of the Milwaukee Bucks roster, but improving his step-back shooting would take his game to a new level.
When Green signed a two-way deal with the team back in 2022, even the most optimistic of Bucks fans would have seen how good he has become. His shooting has always been his standout skill, but his defense has really grown in the last two seasons. Now, adding a different type of skill, such as a step-back shot, to his game could elevate him further as an NBA player.
AJ Green needs to add a step back shot to develop even further
On step-back jump shots, Green shot just 29.2 percent in the 2024-25 regular season. Teammate Gary Trent Jr. can be an example for him to follow, with his ability to create his own shot, such as with step-backs, elevating his importance to the team. Opposing teams will be more aware than ever of Green's ability and will do everything to keep him quiet.
Green averaged 7.4 points and 2.1 rebounds on shooting splits of .429/.427/.815 last season. There was an extended period of time where Green started the season only shooting 3-pointers, and the joke was that he had yet to dunk in the NBA despite showing he could in pickup games. As he develops as a player, he can grow from a perimeter shooter to an all-around scorer.
His role may increase in the upcoming season with how the current Bucks roster looks. Giannis Antetokounmpo is likely to be the offensive initiator more as a ball-handler, in a point-forward type role. The gravity that Giannis has on offense will continue to open up the game for the likes of Green to score from the perimeter. It could see Green enter the starting lineup, but the team may also rely on him to be a versatile scorer when Giannis heads to the bench.
There is no telling how the Bucks' starting five will look when the season starts.
Green is heading into the final year of his current deal with the Bucks, and the hope for many fans is that an extension is sorted soon. Being able to hit 3-pointers consistently has seen many players receive huge contracts in free agency. If Green continues to add a variety of shots to his game, then the Milwaukee Bucks will want to get him tied down imminently.
Hopefully, Green can keep adding to his game as his NBA journey with the Milwaukee Bucks continues.
