AJ Green's NBA-wide dominance in 1 key area is aiding his breakout with Bucks
By Dalton Sell
Going from an undrafted two-way contract player to a rotation piece on a standard deal, AJ Green has been a nice success story throughout his first few years with the Milwaukee Bucks.
The recently-turned 25-year-old is currently enjoying the best season of his young career, averaging new statistical bests almost entirely across the board. Green is primarily making an impact due to his outside shooting, sinking a scorching 47.7 percent of his triples. Perimeter shooting has always been Green's bread and butter, but his dominance from one particular spot is standing out in a huge way.
Bucks shooting guard AJ Green has been dominant from the corners
On the year, AJ Green is shooting 18-of-26 on his corner triples. Among players to attempt at least 20 corner threes, Green (easily) has the best percentage in the NBA, shooting 69.2 percent. Next on the list is Lakers rookie Dalton Knecht and Atlanta's Garrison Mathews at 58.6 percent. The young guard's success rate has been nothing short of incredible on these particular attempts.
Having a reliable shooter like this makes life much easier for Milwaukee's stars, especially when they are excellent facilitators like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard. When defenses hone in on either of the two, knowing that they have an electric perimeter shooter like Green waiting in the corner - or anywhere - ready to shoot off the pass is a reassuring thought.
In fact, this was on display in Milwaukee's last game against the Miami Heat, when Lillard was met with a double-team, forcing him to pass it to Green in the corner. Fearlessly, Green heaved a 3-pointer and put the Bucks up by four in the closing minutes. Not only is Green lethal from those corners, but this moment also showed that he could do it in clutch moments.
Green is blossoming into something special. Not only has he become a legitimate 3-point weapon, but he's also developed into a reliable defender for this Milwaukee Bucks squad. He's earned a spot in this rotation, and his importance may only continue to rise as the season goes on. The guard could end up cementing his status as an incredible hidden gem find for this franchise.
The Milwaukee Bucks have employed no shortage of dynamic 3-point shooters over the years, but very few of them have shown the fearlessness, confidence and results that AJ Green has.
