Amir Coffey will be the new kid in school when he joins the Milwaukee Bucks, but not everyone in the building will be a stranger. Last season, Coffey shared the court with Kevin Porter Jr. in Los Angeles before the guard got traded to the Bucks mid-season. Now that the two are reunited, it would be a major boost if they could pick up where they last left off with the Clippers.
Bucks would love Coffey and Porter's chemistry to pick back up
During their time together last season, Porter passed the ball to Coffey 109 times. Off those passes, Coffey shot 20-of-44 (45.5 percent) from the floor, including 9-of-24 (37.5 percent) from long range. Porter registered 17 assists thanks to Coffey's makes, tied for the second most among anyone he played with in Los Angeles (would be fourth if his teammates from Milwaukee were factored in).
Those aren't earth-shattering numbers by any means, but they do establish that the tandem does have at least some prebuilt chemistry. That could be useful for someone looking to find their footing on a new team for the first time in their career. It's similar to how Cole Anthony will have Gary Harris after they spent the last few years together with the Magic.
Whether he's playing with Kevin Porter Jr. or anyone else on the Milwaukee Bucks, Amir Coffey's job will be crystal clear. The team needs the wing to stand on the perimeter, ready to fire whenever the ball is thrown his way. He will find himself open, and history shows he can capitalize when given those great looks. For his career, Coffey has shot 38.4 percent from behind the arc.
The Milwaukee Bucks will count on him to keep it up if he wants legitimate minutes.
It must be noted that Coffey isn't on the standard roster right now. The Bucks picked him up via a deal just for training camp (which is a flat-out steal). However, there's a good chance he finds a way to earn a promotion to the standard roster by opening night, as Milwaukee would be foolish to let him slip by. Given everything he's shown in his career, this is a role player who can legitimately help this team.
Hopefully Kevin Porter Jr. can help make Coffey's transition to Milwaukee a smooth one both on and off the court. It must be noted that Doc Rivers was also Coffey's coach during his rookie year in LA, so Porter is not the lone connection Coffey has in the city, even if the wing didn't play a prominent role then.
