Bucks can't afford to roll the dice on latest rising trade rumor

Trading for Dejounte Murray, a player coming off an Achilles tear, would certainly be a choice.

The Milwaukee Bucks reportedly expressed interest in Dejounte Murray in the past, and some circles wonder if that interest could reappear before the NBA Trade Deadline, per league insider Jake Fischer (subscription required). As the Bucks explore the market for a big splash, trading for Murray would be an out-of-left-field move that wouldn't solve many of their issues.

Dejounte Murray doesn't solve the Bucks' current glaring flaws

After tearing his right Achilles tendon last season, Murray, currently with the New Orleans Pelicans, is eyeing a January return date. Trading for a player who has been out of the lineup for nearly a year and is going to need a ramp up period would certainly be puzzling, especially if the Bucks remain in their current slump and need a jolt sooner rather than later.

The Milwaukee Bucks also shouldn't be eyeing another 6-foot-4 guard right now. The team already has a strong duo of Kevin Porter Jr. and Ryan Rollins, who shouldn't be separated as starters. While Murray could make them a fearsome trio full of capable scorers, defenders, and passers, there are far more pressing concerns with this roster that need addressing, such as the small forward spot.

Last but certainly not least, Murray is on the books for $30.8 million this season and $32.8 million next year while holding a player option for $30.7 million the year after that. That's a lot of money for a player who is coming off a significant injury and who isn't an immediate game-changer like what this team may need to keep its head above water.

If the Milwaukee Bucks want to spend big, which all reports indicate they are willing to do, they'd be better off checking elsewhere. Ironically, Fischer mentioned in the same report that Michael Porter Jr. is a target the Bucks are evaluating. As a strong rebounder, sweet outside shooter, and legitimate option at small forward, he'd make much more sense for Milwaukee than another smaller guard.

The Milwaukee Bucks know what's at stake with their next move. Giannis Antetokounmpo rumors have never been more rampant than they are right now. Their next move could either set them back a few decades or propel them forward into a much brighter chapter of Bucks basketball. It feels hard to envision trading for a guard coming off an Achilles injury, with $90 million owed to him, as the answer.
