Bucks’ biggest weakness will haunt them no matter what happens this summer

The Bucks have been absolutely awful in the draft for years.

Perhaps no other team needs a draft win as badly as the Bucks, but their recent track record is not in their favor. Milwaukee currently has a general manager who’s been awful at drafting over the last five years and a coach who is notorious for poor player development. Even if the Bucks get great Draft Lottery luck, it may not be enough to overcome their organizational flaws.

The Bucks need to buck their recent draft trends

Since the 2020 season, the Bucks have been arguably the worst drafting team in the entire NBA. No one else has gotten so little from their selections as the Bucks, although that’s also influenced by late picks due to dominant seasons and selections that were traded away.

But the Bucks have failed spectacularly whenever they have made a selection. Bizarrely, they’ve chosen many project players in the draft despite being in win-now mode for close to a decade. Fans hope that the front office will change this strategy in 2026 if they hope to keep Giannis Antetokounmpo around.

Instead, the Bucks are probably best off choosing a player who can contribute right away. Obviously, the only goal that makes sense for a team with Giannis is contending for a title, at least to start a season. Anything less would be wasting his talents. And getting a draft pick who can make a positive impact from day one will be paramount to that goal.

Picking a project player could spell the end of Giannis’ time in Milwaukee. He will rightfully have no reason to believe a raw talent can develop to help the team win a title before wasting years of his prime. And even less reason to believe that young talent can reach its potential under Doc Rivers.

A good draft is the Bucks’ last lifeline

As an organization, the Bucks have run out of other tools besides the draft. In the past, they’ve managed to survive despite their draft failures because of their solid older cast and trades to acquire new stars. But that cast of veterans is nearly gone now, and bringing in a new star seems nearly impossible given their lack of assets and difficult cap sheet.

But a great draft pick outperforming his starting salary will be the huge advantage that can revive this team. Other contending teams have already seen the benefits in recent years, such as the Spurs and Thunder with their young cores. In today’s CBA, hitting on draft picks is a requirement for finding sustainable success.

It’s not over yet for the Bucks’ future title hopes, but a bad draft could be the final nail in the coffin. For once, the front office and coaching staff need to find a great rookie.
