The Milwaukee Bucks had one roster spot up for grabs after the NBA Trade Deadline, and they gave it to Cam Thomas, per ESPN's Shams Charania. Now that Thomas is heading to Milwaukee, the roster is full with 15 standard players. That leaves Pete Nance's future with the team in question, as it felt like he would be the one to get that final spot.
Bucks sign Thomas, still have Nance on a two-way contract
Nance is still with the Milwaukee Bucks via a two-way contract, but he only has a certain number of games left and is currently not postseason eligible. Both of those things are why he's deserving of a standard contract, given how well he's played lately. With Giannis Antetokounmpo injured, Nance has given the team a shot in the arm and looks like another two-way success in the making.
Yet, unless the Bucks clear roster room, Nance is destined to stay on a two-way for the remainder of the year.
The NBA Trade Deadline is over, so they cannot make a move via trade. Would the Milwaukee Bucks consider waiving a player? That's a possibility, with Andre Jackson Jr. being the likeliest candidate, as he is an expiring deal, while players like Gary Harris, Taurean Prince, and Jericho Sims are all on the team's books for next season as well.
If the Bucks can find a way to get both Pete Nance and Cam Thomas on the standard roster over the next several weeks, that would make plenty of sense.
As for Thomas, he's a fine pickup. Milwaukee's offense has been ugly this season, with or without Giannis in the lineup. They need a spark anywhere they can get it, and Thomas, who has averaged 21.4 points per game over the last three seasons, can certainly provide that. He's likely not the type of needle-mover that gets this team over the hump, but he's a fine addition.
Milwaukee was also hurting regarding its backcourt depth after waiving Mark Sears and trading away Cole Anthony at the deadline. At the bare minimum, Thomas can be an experienced ball-handler off the bench to support guards Ryan Rollins and Kevin Porter Jr.
The Bucks are paying fairly little to acquire his services, so it's not like the team is breaking the bank to bring him aboard. At 24, Thomas is still young and should have a chip on his shoulder in Milwaukee.
