The Milwaukee Bucks are one of the teams that have expressed interest in acquiring Jonathan Kuminga via a sign-and-trade. Their interest makes sense, given his potential as a 23-year-old wing, and they could give him what he's looking for, but would he rather rebuild his value with a contender, proving he can contribute to winning basketball?
NBA insider Michael Scotto was recently a guest on the Wilder Wolves podcast. He said he believes Kuminga is prioritizing consistent playing time, which, of course, never happened for him in Golden State.
"I think for Jonathan Kuminga, the main thing is getting consistent playing time and finally having an opportunity, if he can, to show and realize the potential he showed when he was with Golden State. He's yet to get that opportunity in full, and Minnesota would provide him the best opportunity for that. With the Lakers, there's also the possibility that he would be a starting forward. I think it would be more concrete with Minnesota, though."
Milwaukee can certainly offer him what he's looking for, but, as Scotto mentioned, so can Los Angeles and Minnesota. He could slide into the starting power-forward spot for either team, both of which will be competing for a championship. Or at least they'll be trying to.
LA and Minnesota can offer Kuminga a bigger opportunity
The Bucks aren't in tank mode, but after trading Giannis Antetokounmpo, they've entered a new territory they can make their own. They're no longer frantically searching for ways to push all of their chips in on winning a title.
Kuminga could view Milwaukee as a place where he could grow with the organization. He could see it as a chance for him to have more freedom to be the scoring threat he believes he can be, which, in turn, could add to his value, but not in the same way he could if he went to Los Angeles, and not just because the Lakers are, well, the Lakers.
There is a lot more to be said about a player who plays a key role on one of the top teams in their conference versus one who is putting up higher numbers on a team that could finish out of play-in tournament range entirely.
Kuminga could do wonders for his image by stepping into a starting role with the Lakers or the Timberwolves and doing well, proving he can be the player he thinks he can be.
Consistent playing time and money seem to be the two most important factors in the Kuminga sweepstakes, but there is more to it than that. It is up to him to decide the kind of situation he wants to venture into. Maybe he is drawn more to a rebuilding team like the Bucks, but it's hard to see him passing up the greener pastures that are out there for him.
