After missing the last three games, it was clear that Milwaukee Bucks point guard Damian Lillard was dealing with some sort of injury.
It was initially reported that it was some sort of calf issue, but there wasn't much clarity at the start. Well, now, the latest update on what is going on with Lillard highlights why that may have been, as the proper testing reveals Lillard has a blood clot in his right calf, and he is set to be out indefinitely, per multiple media outlets.
Lillard said this to NBA insider Chris Haynes about the diagnosis:
“It’s unfortunate that something outside of my control would come up. Along with the Bucks’ medical staff, our priorities are to protect my health and safety. As much as I love basketball, I need to be there for my kids and my family. I’m grateful the Bucks acted quickly on this. They’ve been supportive and proactive throughout this process. I look forward to moving past this and continuing my career.”
Health must be at the forefront for Bucks guard Damian Lillard
No matter what it means for the Milwaukee Bucks, Lillard must prioritize his health when it comes to a matter this serious, and he's clearly doing so. No one can fault him for that. Haynes added that Lillard is on blood thinners, which have stabilized the issue right now and that testing will continue to make sure he stays in good health.
According to The Athletic's Eric Nehm and Sam Amick, a source says there is optimism that Lillard could still return to the lineup this season despite this diagnosis. Of course, no one can predict this type of injury and its timeline in full, especially this early, but this is a positive sign right off the bat. There aren't many regular season games left as the Milwaukee Bucks gear up for the postseason.
Without Lillard in the lineup for the time being, the Milwaukee Bucks will have to push forward. It won't be easy, with the team already missing Jericho Sims due to a thumb procedure, Bobby Portis due to a suspension and Giannis Antetokounmpo now on the injury report with a foot sprain, but no one plans on feeling sorry for them. Everyone has to embrace the "next man up" mentality.
To stay afloat in Lillard's absence, the Milwaukee Bucks will desperately need someone to step up in the backcourt, putting more responsibility on the shoulders of Ryan Rollins and Kevin Porter Jr. They are now the first and second string point guards, and Milwaukee needs their scoring, playmaking and shooting ability much more than they did previously.
It's unfortunate the Lillard's time with the Milwaukee Bucks has largely been plagued by injuries over these past two years. Let's hope this is just a small roadblock for the Bucks star guard.
