The 2025 NBA Draft is right around the corner, and the Milwaukee Bucks have already started getting together a list of prospects to work out, including Texas Tech's Darrion Williams. While there is plenty to like about Williams, there is also one glaring flaw, which is his lack of athleticism. That could make him a tough sell for a Milwaukee team that desperately needs athletes on this roster next season.
Assessing Darrion Williams' fit in Milwaukee
To be clear, if the Milwaukee Bucks used the 47th pick on Williams, there shouldn't be a huge uproar about the selection.
At 6-foot-6, 225 lbs, Williams has decent length and a sturdy frame that make him a quality defender no matter what position he is guarding. He does more than just play defense, as the forward is a jack of all trades, shooting 37.9 percent from deep, dishing three assists and hauling in 6.7 rebounds per game during his collegiate career. Simply put, he's an energizer who can impact the game anytime.
The Milwaukee Bucks could use a sparkplug, especially one who can help defensively, but also in the rebounding department. Hustle and tracking down boards were often a problem for Milwaukee during the season, and Williams is the type of player who could be helpful in addressing it. His sweet 3-point shot also certainly adds to his desirability.
The problem is that this team could use more athleticism. In his draft profile, Yahoo Sports' NBA writer Kevin O'Connor compared Williams to Grant Williams and Joe Ingles. Even if Williams potentially does possess more defensive upside than those two, those aren't the type of players the Milwaukee Bucks need right now. They need high-flying, quick-footed athletes.
To further hammer home Williams' lack of athletic ability, O'Connor noted in his profile that during the forward's three collegiate seasons, Synergy clocked him as having dunked in the halfcourt just twice. For a player of his size, that's almost unheard of. Yet, it's just not something that Williams has ever had in his arsenal, which won't magically change in the NBA.
Whether it's Darrion Williams or someone else, the Milwaukee Bucks have a legitimate shot at stealing a player with the 47th pick in the upcoming draft. They must use it wisely. Williams has nice upside as a do-it-all forward, but his lack of athleticism may be the one thing that gives teams some pause in the draft process.
