Bucks should buy low on free agent reclamation project to fill roster hole

With plenty of uncertainty in the frontcourt, a low-risk move makes sense.

Even if Giannis Antetokounmpo stays, the Milwaukee Bucks will have plenty of questions regarding their frontcourt rotation this offseason. If they need to add some size, it would make sense for them to target Bol Bol, the 7-foot-3 big man who just finished out the season with the Phoenix Suns, on a team-friendly deal.

Bol Bol would help the Milwaukee Bucks embrace change

This past season, the Milwaukee Bucks were plagued by a lack of athleticism and mobility at center. That's what ultimately got Brook Lopez benched in the postseason. Now, with Lopez, Bobby Portis and Jericho Sims all eligible to hit the free agent market this summer, the Bucks may need to add a big body or two, and Bol could be an interesting low-risk gamble as they look to switch things up.

The 7-foot-3 big man has an impressive 7-foot-8 wingspan. That length makes him a shot-blocking threat whenever he's on the floor, especially when paired with his mobility. In the one season he got legitimate playing time, the 2022-23 campaign, Bol averaged 1.2 blocks per game. The Bucks could use a strong interior presence like that, especially if Lopez does indeed depart.

Offensively, Bol does a lot of his damage close to the basket, but he's toyed with a perimeter jumper over the years. For his career, he's shot 33.2 percent from three. If the big man can work on his shot persistently, just like Brook Lopez did when he first got to town, he could quietly develop into a strong fit next to Giannis Antetokounmpo due to his spacing capabilities.

From a physical standpoint, Bol has the type of traits that the Milwaukee Bucks' big men have lacked in recent memory. He's certainly not as bulky, but he's more mobile and athletic. He might not be able to guard on the perimeter or switch seamlessly, a problem that has haunted this team, but at his age and with his attributes, he can pester his matchup, especially inside.

While the Milwaukee Bucks will have some flexibility to make improvements this offseason, they still could benefit from finding a hidden gem or two. Bol Bol, who really hasn't earned a legitimate shot to prove himself in his NBA career, could be just that. If the Bucks could snag him on a team-friendly deal, perhaps they could unearth something in the youngster, who is still just 25.
