With so many questions in the backcourt, especially after rumors surfaced that Kevin Porter Jr. will likely decline his player option, it's no surprise the Milwaukee Bucks are looking at several guards in the 2025 NBA Draft. Right around when the Porter rumors came to life, Liberty's Taelon Peter made his way onto Milwaukee's draft workout list, which is put together by HoopsHype.
As Porter's future in Milwaukee remains up in the air, the Bucks could be laying the early groundwork for a backup plan if they are unable to retain the guard.
There is plenty of intrigue with Bucks' workout attendee Taelon Peter
What immediately stands out with Peter is his offensive efficiency. The guard shot 57.8 percent on his 2-point shots and 43.5 percent on his long-distance shots en route to averaging 13.7 points last year. He's the definition of a bucket-getter, something the Milwaukee Bucks could certainly use if they were to lose Gary Trent Jr. or Kevin Porter Jr. Of course, Damian Lillard will also miss significant time.
Though the scoring is impressive, Peter lacks much presence as a facilitator, averaging just an assist to 0.6 turnovers per game in 2024-25. Sure, he could aim to work on that at the NBA level, but it's a red flag amidst these early draft evaluations.
While he's a nice player, the Milwaukee Bucks likely won't spend their 47th overall selection on Peter. He's much likelier to go undrafted. If that does happen, perhaps the Bucks could pick him to join the Summer League squad. If he were to impress there, Milwaukee could look to keep him around in some capacity, likely down in the G League with the Wisconsin Herd as a project prospect.
It's clear that the Milwaukee Bucks need to find some hidden gems. The team has lacked young help for so long, and while there's no guarantee Peter can fill that void, it makes sense that the franchise is willing to cast a wide net ahead of the draft.
Taelon Peter joins a long list of draft prospect point guards the Milwaukee Bucks are working out that includes Mark Sears, Max Shulga, Wade Taylor IV, AJ Hoggard, and Milos Uzan. More than likely, they aren't done either. The NBA Draft is about two weeks away, and there's plenty of buzz about what the Milwaukee Bucks might do. Right now, there's simply no telling.
