Not everyone attending NBA training camp with the Milwaukee Bucks will make it to the opening night roster. When the cuts inevitably come, Cormac Ryan, the latest addition to the roster, will likely be the first to hear his name called due to the status of his contract, which is an Exhibit 10. However, even if he gets cut, the Bucks still have some plans for him.
Cormac Ryan will almost certainly stick in the Bucks organization
The plan became clear the moment it was announced that Ryan was joining the Bucks via an Exhibit 10 contract. Simply put, it's a non-guaranteed contract that typically leads to the signee joining that team's G League affiliate for a nice bonus once they are waived. With the Bucks roster overflowing as it stands, the 26-year-old will inevitably make his way to the Wisconsin Herd this coming season.
With all that in mind, no one should be shocked when the Cormac Ryan news hits after training camp.
Bringing him in for Summer League and training camp, the Milwaukee Bucks clearly like what they see in Ryan. At 26, he isn't a raw hidden gem, but there may be something there. Playing in the G League will help him earn legitimate reps and give the Bucks first dibs if they want to promote him.
If Ryan ever wants to take the next step, it all starts with his efficiency as a scorer. It's always been a glaring weakness. During his five-year college stay, he shot just 39.5 percent from the floor. In the G League last year, he hit 40.2 percent of his shot attempts. As a member of the Milwaukee Bucks in the Summer League, he sank an abysmal 32.6 percent of his tries. That won't cut it at the next level.
Ryan can spend the next year working on his craft and hoping to follow the blueprint of players who have made the transition from the G League to the NBA successfully.
While Ryan's fate feels sealed, the same isn't the case for others on this team. The Bucks still must sort out what will come of Andre Jackson Jr. and Amir Coffey. Jackson's deal is non-guaranteed, so he may be out the door. Coffey is on an Exhibit 9, meaning he can only join the team for camp and not in the G League, like Ryan will do.
There should be plenty of roster movement in the coming days.
