After a year playing overseas, former NBA player Patrick Beverley is itching to return. Beverley played with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2023-24 before heading overseas, and though his stint was rather short, he became something of a fan favorite in the 414. Due to his familiarity with the franchise, especially Doc Rivers, it wouldn't be shocking if they took a look at him this coming summer.
"I'm making my entrance back to the NBA next year. I miss it. I done hit a couple [general managers], a couple coaches. I told them, 'Hey, look, listen, just invite me to training camp. I don't need no favors. I don't need none of that.'"
The Bucks could be a suitor for Patrick Beverley due to Doc Rivers
During his brief playoff run with the Milwaukee Bucks, Beverley played solid basketball, putting up a line of 8.2 points, 5.5 assists, 3.3 rebounds, one steal and 0.7 blocks per game. He likely could have earned another NBA deal, maybe even one to stay with the Bucks, but he went overseas due to what was a "historic" offer.
It wouldn't be shocking if Beverly attended camp with the Bucks. Yes, they need to get more athletic and younger this offseason, and soon-to-be 37-year-old Patrick Beverley certainly wouldn't help in either regard. However, his role as an energizer and motivator cannot be overlooked. Coaches and players value having that type of presence around, so they might want to get a look at him.
Furthermore, with Damian Lillard likely to miss significant time next season, the Milwaukee Bucks will need point guard depth. Retaining Kevin Porter Jr. and Ryan Rollins should be the main focus, but an experienced mentor like Patrick Beverley for them could be useful to have in the building in the eyes of the Bucks coaching staff or front office.
The relationship with Doc Rivers could truly be the biggest factor here. Not only were the two with the Milwaukee Bucks, but they also go back to their time with the LA Clippers. Beverley had always been outspoken about his respect for Rivers, and it wouldn't be surprising if Rivers was one of the coaches that Patrick Beverley reached out to, as he alluded to on his podcast.
A camp invite to get a better look at Beverley wouldn't be worth rioting about. If the guard impresses, perhaps they give him a non-guaranteed deal. If he doesn't look like he has much to give, they can let him go. A camp deal is about as low-risk as it gets. Whether it's the Milwaukee Bucks or not, someone will likely take a flyer on the three-time All-Defensive honoree.
