The Milwaukee Bucks had no miraculous response in store despite Giannis Antetokounmpo's return on Monday. Instead, they dropped a third straight game by 20-plus points to slip eight games below .500. After Charlotte's win on Tuesday, the Bucks sit four games out of the Play-In picture behind both the Hornets and Hawks.
A recent 8-2 stretch sparked excitement, but things are back to looking bleak. The emotional roller coaster continues.
If they dig themselves out of this latest mess, it will likely be because Giannis puts the team on his back. For those seeking optimism, he had something to offer following the loss to Boston. Amid a season of recurring injuries, an extended absence finally gave him a chance to properly recover.Â
He provided the example of a bank account to illustrate.
"You're at, I don't know, minus $50, right? Then you come back and you're at plus $10 and then all of a sudden you go back minus $15, and you just keep playing in that line, which is not good. You just got to fill the tank …"
I feel like I've been playing in a deficit this whole year, and now this is the first time that I feel like I have a little bit in my tank. That I'm not risking anything."Â
Having the Greek Freak at full throttle is Bucks' best hopeÂ
So, Giannis, you're saying you played most of the season at less than a full tank? While averaging 27.7 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game? From that perspective, there is hope to be had.Â
Antetokounmpo made it all of 14 games into the season before sustaining his first notable injury, a left groin strain versus Cleveland. Prior to that, the Bucks were 8-6, puttering along after a hot start. Much like their superstar, they've been struggling to recapture even that modest mark of competence.
There are plenty of reasons to believe that having him back, feeling more refreshed than he's been all year, won't matter. Some level of rust was only to be expected, but Giannis was clearly off in his post-All-Star break debut. He conceded as much afterward.Â
Moreover, the team is still sub-.500 when he plays, although that doesn't account for the reshuffled roster. Can he stay healthy? Good question. And, yes, he'll remain on a minutes restriction for the foreseeable future. Those are all excellent reasons to temper expectations.
This season has confronted Giannis with new challenges
And yet, if his admission bears out on the court, indicating that he's been playing at less than full capacity by somehow being even more dominant, the Bucks could still be the Play-In squad no one wants to face. That, the best-case scenario at this late date in the season, remains on the table.Â
Sure, he's been injured before. Every year, there seems to be something. But the 2025-26 season has been different as he's dealt with soft-tissue, muscle-related issues, as opposed to issues with joints or ligaments. He'll safeguard his health this time around, but the unique circumstances offer another reason to keep up hope that he has another gear to reach.
"Like, I've been dealing with knee pain in the past. It's totally different. If you're not able to take care of your soft-tissue injuries, they can linger. And I feel like that's what has happened this year."Â
It was probably a bad idea: coming back early from his first calf strain in December, then gutting out the end of that Nuggets game several weeks later. Finally, though, Giannis feels like he was able to achieve meaningful recovery.Â
Now's the time for a miracle if one is coming
Feeling like he's not going to reinjure his calf with one wrong move, or worse, pop his Achilles, would be as good as any trade addition for the Bucks. If he can just play free, letting loose the full force of physicality, they will take it. Absolutely.Â
As Giannis regains his rhythm, that doesn't guarantee the team will look any different than the frustrating squad on display over the past three games, or the one that, even with him, put themselves behind the 8-ball earlier this season.
Playing alongside his new teammates, Cam Thomas and Ousmane Dieng, will take some getting used to. So will re-integrating into an offense led in his absence by Kevin Porter Jr. and Ryan Rollins.
If there is a happy ending to this story, though, Giannis gave fans a reason to believe in it. They just need to see it on the court. Â
