For years now, the Milwaukee Bucks have been unable to find stability at the backup point guard spot, cycling through different names every so often. If they desire, they should have a golden opportunity to tackle this weakness head-on in the NBA Draft, as there are set to be a handful of point guards in the range they are projected to pick.
If the Bucks decide to keep the Kevin Porter Jr. and Ryan Rollins pairing together, which would make sense due to how well they played off one another, finding a suitable backup is essential. Just look at the three-headed monster the San Antonio Spurs have put together with De'Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper, and Stephon Castle. The Bucks could look to create their own version of that formidable backcourt.
Bucks could find a reliable backup point guard in this year's draft
Barring something completely out of left field, the Milwaukee Bucks are expected to land the ninth pick in this draft. It feels safe to say that Houston's Kingston Flemmings, Arkansas' Darius Acuff Jr., and Illinois' Keaton Wagler will be gone by then. However, in that range, three names projected to be available are Arizona's Brayden Burries, Louisville's Mikal Brown Jr., and Alabama's Labaron Philon Jr.
As he's shown throughout March Madness, Burrieis is a do-it-all player who impacts winning at the highest level. Brown has the type of burst that could make him a lethal contributor at the next level. Philon's frame is among the question marks he faces as he prepares for the next level, but he has guard instincts that simply can't be taught. He feels like a day-one contributor.
Truly, the Milwaukee Bucks couldn't go wrong with any of these three. All have their flaws, of course, but they all boast positives that far outweigh them. Any of those three would be excellent additions, giving the Bucks a solid point guard locked in for the future who could help them whether they run it back or decide it's time to start fresh.
There's no telling what the Milwaukee Bucks will do
Of course, the Bucks are unpredictable when it comes to drafting. They had a golden opportunity to take a wing who could contribute from day one in Ryan Dunn, Kyshawn George, or Terrence Shannon Jr. in 2024 and selected AJ Johnson, a raw guard. One would think Milwaukee would be looking at an electrifying guard in this one, but it's far from a guarantee.
Perhaps the Milwaukee Bucks could try to tackle a different weakness at the small forward spot and select Tennessee's Nate Ament or New Zealand's Kareem Lopez. In doing so, they would be forced to commit to another year of uncertainty at the backup point guard spot, but that might be a risk they see worth taking.
Draft night cannot get here soon enough.
