There's been a lot of chatter from external sources about Giannis Antetokounmpo's future with the Milwaukee Bucks being murky heading into the NBA offseason. One Bucks insider and reporter who is close to the situation on a day-to-day basis says don't buy into the hype. Speaking on Bluesky, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Jim Owczarski had this to say:
"First: Giannis will not be traded this summer. The greater likelihood is, well, never. Second: These are the unsexy aka realistic conversations. He will require another supermax. So, yeah, the ACTUAL mechanics of this are very, very clunky for teams."
The Bucks (obviously) want to keep Giannis for the rest of his career
Yes, it was easy for teams to jump to the conclusion that Giannis may ask out of Milwaukee after the team suffered a third consecutive first-round defeat. Context, which the external media conveniently always seems to forget, is important, as the Bucks were bothered by a major injury during every trip. However, there were also plenty of flaws with the team even when fully healthy.
He's a winner, and he always has been. Yet, there's always more to chase. He's made it clear that if he feels like the Milwaukee Bucks are incapable of competing at the highest level, he will leave and seek a better opportunity. Based on Owczarski's comments, Giannis isn't going anywhere, so he must still have that belief that the Bucks can get back to the highest level.
To make sure that remains the case for a long time, the Milwaukee Bucks must put the best roster around him to show they are committed to winning year in and year out. Although there likely won't be a trade for a high-end star coming this summer like there have been in recent offseasons, Jon Horst will still have plenty of flexibility to patch many looming roster holes.
If the Milwaukee Bucks make legitimate changes, particularly regarding the age and athletic ability of the roster, they could find themselves in a solid position heading into next season. In the past, Giannis has remained committed when the Bucks are their most aggressive, inking extensions after deals for Holiday and Lillard. That aggressive, all-in approach cannot change in Milwaukee's front office.
Everyone knows Giannis Antetokounmpo has always wanted to play his entire career in Milwaukee, but it will be up to management to make sure that ultimately comes true. At times like this in the past, Giannis has possibly added some fuel to the fire by teasing he'd maybe be open to playing for some other team, perhaps to give the front office some extra motivation. That could be the case here.
