Bucks' unforeseen rotation decision from win over Heat shows brief potential
By Dalton Sell
Yes, the Milwaukee Bucks were short-handed, but it was still surprising when MarJon Beauchamp went to the scorer's table with 48 seconds left in the first frame against the Miami Heat on Tuesday.
The wing has not been in Milwaukee's rotation consistently this season whatsoever, with almost all of his minutes coming during mop-up duty. Yet, with Giannis Antetokounmpo out, Doc Rivers had to dig deep into his bench, which involved calling MarJon Beauchamp much earlier than usual, turning a few heads in the process.
MarJon Beauchamp flashes glimpses in limited minutes for the Bucks
Not only did Beauchamp close the first quarter, but he also got some legitimate run to begin the next one. In his nearly six-and-a-half minutes of game action, the wing finished with three points and a pair of rebounds. The points came off of a nice corner triple, where he faked out the contesting defender to get himself open. The rebounds were just a matter of staying active on the glass.
The 24-year-old also showed brief potential on defense, chasing his matchup and making every shot difficult. At 6-foot-6 with a 7-foot wingspan, Beauchamp has always had the potential to be a pest on that side of the court due to his physical attributes, but he's never been able to harness it. Six and a half minutes does not change that entirely, but there's no denying that he played strong basketball.
Truly, he looked like the type of player the Milwaukee Bucks have hoped he would become since they drafted him in the first round way back in 2022.
Despite the solid play against the Miami Heat, Beauchamp likely will not be a permanent member of the rotation moving forward, even with Milwaukee's newfound reliance on youth. It's been a challenge of a year for Beauchamp thus far, with the Bucks declining his option for next season, leading both the team and Beauchamp's reps to scout around for a new home for the 24-year-old.
It'll be fascinating to see if MarJon Beauchamp can crack the rotation in any capacity moving forward or if this was just a one-time thing. One must also wonder if this quick nationally televised appearance might catch the eye of opposing teams, calling the trade-hungry Bucks to inquire what it would take to get Beauchamp amid the ongoing trade rumors surrounding him.
At the bare minimum, it's nice to know that the currently Milwaukee Bucks have an energy-filled wing waiting on the bench to hear his name called at any given moment.
