The Milwaukee Bucks, by all accounts, have never had Giannis Antetokounmpo trade discussions in good faith. Per NBA insider Jake Fischer (subscription required), the word on the street regarding Milwaukee's ask for the Greek Freak is "unrealistic." The Bucks could be trying to show Giannis that, regardless of where he gets traded, his chances of contending might not increase much because that team will have nothing left after trading for him. Maybe that opens the door for him to stay.
The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson hit the nail on the head with his analysis on the situation.
"The Bucks, incidentally, are VERY much aware of how much Giannis wants to play in Miami. They seem determined to leave the Heat in a compromised roster position so that the Heat also has a hard time doing what the Bucks couldn't do the past 5 years (build a championship team around him)."
Bucks could be trying to forge their own pitch
Sure, Giannis might want to play for Miami, but does he want to play for a Miami team that is about to lose all of its depth and future draft picks? Bam Adebayo will be there, and the no state income tax would be a breath of fresh air, but how about contending? That's the entire reason why he might have eyes on other teams in the first place. They certainly wouldn't be favored by many people.
Perhaps Milwaukee's stiff demands are their way of warning Giannis that the grass might not always be greener. While the Bucks' roster wasn't great last season, perhaps the front office can make their pitch to keep him by telling Giannis they can actually tweak things and put a contender around him—the hiring of Taylor Jenkins is a great first step in that regard.
Bucks have the assets to tweak the roster
While discussing Giannis trades with other teams, the Milwaukee Bucks are certainly making their own calls to upgrade the roster. What kind of talent could they get on this roster to convince their superstar that they can once again be good enough to get back to the NBA mountaintop? With an assortment of assets, they will have options.
Maybe the Bucks circle back to their Ja Morant interest that was present at the NBA Trade Deadline. Trey Murphy III's name has been in trade whispers in recent weeks; he could be the small forward this team needs. Is there a world where the Milwaukee Bucks could get both? That would certainly be one heck of a pitch.
If the Bucks pursue roster upgrades, no one will know what they are until they happen. The front office has always been tight-lipped, as evidenced by moves for Jrue Holiday and Damian Lillard. If the Bucks can repeat history with a blockbuster move like either of those trades, perhaps Giannis sees that maybe Milwaukee still has a shot and reconsiders his desire to play elsewhere.
Of course, that's all speculation, but the Bucks would certainly like to keep their star, so it wouldn't be shocking if they were sneakily working to convince him that they are his best spot.
