Cormac Ryan had a quick cup of coffee with the Milwaukee Bucks this past summer before joining their G League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd. There, he has earned a larger opportunity to spread his wings and showcase his potential. That's exactly what Ryan did in the Herd's recent matchup with the South Bay Lakers in the G League Showcase, making it clear he can perform at a high level.
Former Bucks wing just dazzled for G League squad
Against the South Bay Lakers, Ryan did it all.
Offensively, he was smooth, shooting 6-of-7 from 2-point range. He struggled more from downtown, knocking in just two of his eight tries, but his overall efficiency was still stellar. That smooth scoring, in addition to two free throws, led to a 22-point eruption. It was tied for the most points he's scored in a Herd jersey this season.
While the scoring stole the show, Ryan did all of the little things as well. Notably, he finished with six rebounds and six steals. The wing has never been known for his facilitating or defense, but both were clearly components of his arsenal in this one. His basketball instincts were on full display, both when finding his teammates for looks or snatching the basketball to create more offensive opportunities.
All in all, Ryan finished with 22 points, six assists, six takeaways, three rebounds, and a blocked shot. It was an impressive night from the Herd product, serving as a bright spot following a tough loss to the Lakers. His efforts likely caught attention at the ongoing G League showcase. If he can keep this type of play up, that won't stop.
It's not the first time Ryan has displayed some potential since making his way to Wisconsin. With the Milwaukee Bucks this past Summer League, he had a potential-filled night with 18 points, two assists, and a steal. He couldn't quite keep that type of production up, finding himself in a mini-slump, but he never lost his confidence, an incredibly valuable attribute.
Considering he stuck around for training camp and then worked his way onto the G League squad, it's clear that Ryan has fans in the organization. Still, though the Bucks could use as many wings as they can get their hands on due to recent injury woes, it's unlikely that Ryan makes his way onto the roster anytime soon. They simply don't have the room right now.
If he keeps playing like this and a spot opens up, never say never.
