The OKC Thunder have been decimated by injuries, losing three starters to long-term issues. It's only natural for them to seek external help, with ESPN's Brian Windhorst reporting on The Hoop Collective that it wouldn't be surprising if they acquired one of their former players. Milwaukee Bucks forward Ousmane Dieng would make plenty of sense if OKC can hold out until December, when he becomes trade-eligible.
Ousmane Dieng would fit like a glove back in OKC
Dieng was in OKC's system for three-and-a-half years before landing with the Milwaukee Bucks at last season's NBA Trade Deadline. He knows the vast majority of coaches and players over there well, and that sense of familiarity could help him seamlessly transition back. With Jalen Williams potentially out for the entire season, Dieng could be useful in filling out their forward depth.
If the 23-year-old did return to his old stomping grounds, he would do so more polished than when he left. Last season, Dieng hit the ground running when he landed in Milwaukee, looking like the Thunder were holding him back. There were improvements in scoring, rebounding, and passing in his game; all things OKC desperately needs right now.
It likely wouldn't cost the Thunder too much. Dieng will take home $5.8 million this season, and with an assortment of trade exceptions, OKC could easily absorb him. If they were willing to cough up an offer centered around second round pick compensation, the Milwaukee Bucks would likely listen to their pitch. Of course, it all depends on whether they can wait about another month.
By then, they might have their roster sorted out.
Nate Ament would make moving Dieng easier
Initially slated to be a key piece in Milwaukee's rotation, Dieng has quickly fallen out of favor this year, largely fueled by Nate Ament's sudden rise. As long as the rookie is on the floor, there really isn't room for Dieng. While he's nice depth to have at the forward spot, it would make sense for the Bucks to add more draft capital to their stash in place of him if it's on the table.
For now, the ball is in OKC's court. They are expected to make moves, especially after backing out of signing Ochai Agbaji, but there is no telling what they will do. Making a move for a former player feels like a wise bet, but Dieng isn't the only one out there. Ty Jerome and Jerami Grant are two others who could be a shot in the arm for the franchise. Time will tell how OKC proceeds.
