Bucks' Tyler Herro patience can pay off at the trade deadline

Milwaukee is positioned well to deal Herro when contenders are more desperate for him.

Tyler Herro has plenty to prove on the Bucks next season, especially being the highest-profile return from trading Giannis Antetokounmpo. Milwaukee has been patient to hang on to Herro this offseason against the temptation to trade him, but that could end up working out for the better if Herro plays well. Instead, the Bucks should have a better trade market for him around the trade deadline when contending teams needing another scorer will be more desperate.

The leaguewide demand for Herro should only increase

The Bucks were wise to not make any rash moves this offseason, including trading Herro for a meager return. His value was understandably low after an injury-plagued campaign last season. But Herro should have a perfect opportunity to rehab his trade value with the Bucks next season.

Although Milwaukee will focus on developing its younger players next season, Herro should still be a focal point of the offense whenever he’s on the court. He’s certainly the most accomplished scorer currently on the roster, including 5 straight seasons averaging at least 20 points per game.

If anything, the Bucks should see his scoring average go up even more, but they must be careful to put him in situations where he can be efficient too. Other teams scoping out Herro as a trade target won’t be interesting in seeing him average 27 points per game on bad efficiency. Instead, keeping up good shooting splits while getting up to 23-25 points per game would be the ideal scenario.

That would show other teams that Herro can slide into a supporting role as an efficient scorer while still retaining some value as a primary option when needed. If used correctly, he should have the ability to showcase his talent in both roles next season. Along with having the ball in his own hands plenty, Herro should also get plenty of off-ball reps next to Ryan Rollins and Kevin Porter Jr, both more natural point guards than him.

The Bucks have no need to rush on Herro

The only thing applying pressure on the Bucks to trade Herro quicker is his contract situation. He’s set to hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent unless he signs an extension first. That could change his trade value, but the Bucks aren't out of options.

They can work with him on an extension that leaves him trade-eligible at any time, which is actually very doable given Herro’s current value relative to his contract. Another option is to find a trade partner at the deadline who wants to extend Herro immediately. Either way, Herro’s impending free agency still shouldn’t be a problem forcing the Bucks to act any quicker than necessary.

Overall, the Bucks are handling Tyler Herro the right way. They might very well wind up maximizing his trade value by waiting a bit longer to deal him, especially if he plays well to start the season. From here, it’s in Herro’s own hands how his next contract and situation look.
