The Bucks' shocking decision to waive Cam Thomas could spell disaster for his career prospects. Unfortunately for him, he fits perfectly into the mold of a player being pushed out of the league: small, inefficient guards who are defensive liabilities. This is Thomas' second time getting waived just this season, and he will be hard-pressed to find another NBA suitor any time soon.
The Bucks didn't have any further desire for Thomas
Thomas' dismissal is a clear message from the Bucks that his scoring potential does not make up for his other weaknesses. With his recent shooting woes, Thomas's lack of strong playmaking or impactful defense has limited his contributions. Since arriving in Milwaukee, he's seen his minutes gradually decrease and his role diminish.
The Bucks' final decision on Thomas' future could also reveal their plans for the team's construction. Milwaukee could be hesitant to draft another player with the same weaknesses as Thomas now that they have seen the on-court impact. Even with an extremely talented scorer, it's hard to make up for being a complete non-factor on defense, especially combined with tunnel vision.
Instead, the Bucks have found more success with well-rounded guards. Their best guard this season has been Ryan Rollins, who is also a solid defender and willing passer on top of his growing scoring arsenal. Even though Rollins may not show the same tough shot-making ability that Thomas has occasionally flashed, Rollins is much more consistent and able to contribute in multiple ways.
Cam Thomas could be on his way out of the NBA
Now that Thomas has been waived again by a struggling team, his reputation is even lower across the league. Even when the Bucks initially picked him up, he wasn't generating a lot of interest as a free agent. Thomas has fallen a long way since averaging 24 points per game last season, and his other weaknesses are largely to blame.
The league is clearly shifting in a drastic direction away from players like Thomas. We've seen it reflected even in the trade value of star players, such as Trae Young fetching an extremely meager return for the Hawks or the Grizzlies being unable to find any trade partners for Ja Morant. Both of those players have proven a lot more in the league than Thomas, but are clearly no longer wanted by the teams that drafted them.
Without any proven track record of winning in the NBA, Cam Thomas is now on very thin ice. He's extremely unlikely to find another NBA team before the playoffs but will have another opportunity in the summer. However, he will need to add more dimensions to his game before he can expect another shot in the NBA.
