Milwaukee Bucks fans will not have to wait too much longer for clarity on Giannis Antetokounmpo's future, according to team co-owner Jimmy Haslam. After a press conference on Wednesday with general manager Jon Horst and head coach Taylor Jenkins, Haslam revealed that a decision will be made before the 2026 NBA draft.Â
"I just think before the draft is a natural time, right? If Giannis does play somewhere else, we ought to get a lot of assets, and that's Jon's job to do it. If [Giannis] is here, then you build the team differently."Â
That gives them a deadline of Tuesday, June 23, but an update could come sooner if Giannis and the Bucks reach a conclusion. After months of drama, fans finally have a definite date for a resolution.
Bucks have every incentive to resolve Giannis situation ahead of draft
While down from a fever pitch earlier this season, that drama has simmered throughout the playoffs even as the Bucks watch from the couch. Potential suitors have slipped in and out of the rumor mill's revolving doors in accordance with their postseason success.Â
Still in and playing well? That team may be less likely to get involved in any sweepstakes. Bounced early? The Bucks could receive an unanticipated call.Â
The Bucks will save everyone a lot of trouble if they do, in fact, reconcile Giannis' interests with those of the organization. As Haslam touched on, resolving uncertainty ahead of the draft is critical.
If Giannis moves on, it would be nice to have the option of acquiring additional 2026 draft capital in a trade. That can only happen if Milwaukee agrees to terms on a deal before draft night.Â
On the flip side, if Giannis stays, the Bucks could consider trading their own first-round pick in a move to add another star. Even if they keep the pick, Horst would need to adjust his strategy, prioritizing an NBA-ready prospect over one who might be more of a project.Â
Got it? No more project picks on a win-now team.
Making right call goes beyond whether Giannis wants to stay
Judging by Haslam's remarks, parting ways with the Greek Freak is far from the inevitable outcome.
"I just want to stress, though, that our relationship with him, despite what is reported by certain ESPN writers, is very positive," Haslam said.Â
Certain ESPN writers. Now who could that be?
While not all reporting is necessarily reliable, there have also been clear signs of friction between Giannis and Bucks management. Coming to a conclusion is not necessarily about convincing Antetokounmpo to stay. To make the right decision, the team will consider all sides of the equation, not just what Giannis wants.Â
"You got to get it right, and Jon knows it, and [co-owner] Wes [Edens] knows it, and we didn't hold back with Taylor. We said, 'Listen, he may or may not be with us, so don't come because of that,' because you want to be straight up with people."
Maybe Giannis comes around on the chance to contend in Milwaukee with more movable assets in play this summer. Maybe not. Maybe the Bucks decide that ripping off the Band-Aid on a rebuild is a better play for the franchise. In that case, the decision should be an easy one.
Whatever it looks like, fans will have an answer soon.Â
