The Milwaukee Bucks were reportedly among the teams in the mix to trade for Cam Thomas before the NBA Trade Deadline. However, they are likely glad they didn't give up any assets to land the guard, considering he was waived soon after the deadline buzzer sounded. If that interest persists, there is now a golden opportunity for Milwaukee to get the guard.
Bucks could sign Cam Thomas if they so desire
Milwaukee has one standard roster spot available. While many think it will inevitably go to Pete Nance, who has earned it if that is indeed the route the Bucks take, it wouldn't be surprising if they explored other options first. Cam Thomas might be the most recognizable name on the market right now, so there will likely be an incoming call from Milwaukee on his end soon.
Thomas is known for his scoring above all else. In 91 games over the two seasons prior to this one, the guard averaged 22.9 points while shooting 35.9 percent from deep. He knows how to put points on the board, and the Milwaukee Bucks, who rank 27th in points per game this season, could use a spark in that regard, without question.
The problem with Thomas is that outside of scoring, he doesn't do much else. He'll earn an occasional assist, but he's mostly always looking for his own bucket. At 6-foot-3, he's also somewhat undersized, making him a prime target for opposing ball-handlers to target on the defensive end. The Bucks have found success with Ryan Rollins and Kevin Porter Jr. because they play defense and pass well.
Speaking of those two, one reason the Bucks might sign Thomas, even with all his well-documented flaws, would be the team's need for another ball-handler. Giannis Antetokounmpo is still injured, and Cole Anthony has been traded, leaving Rollins and Porter as primary ball-handlers. Getting another experienced one like Thomas to help could be worthwhile to beef up the roster.
At 24, Cam Thomas is still incredibly young and has room to grow. Can he shake the issues that have lingered throughout his young career? It's debatable, but Brook Lopez was 30 before he landed with the Milwaukee Bucks and became a stout defender overnight. Thomas has plenty of time, and time will tell if he decides to do so with the Bucks.
On a minimum deal, the guard will have a decent market, and there's no telling where he ends up.
