Damian Lillard's next team after Bucks release couldn't be more obvious

Dame Time has left hints about where he wants to be, and the answer has been there all along.

When the Milwaukee Bucks waived Damian Lillard to make room for Myles Turner, it sent shockwaves through the association. It wasn't so much the move itself (though it was certainly unexpected) but how it was carried out: no prior warning, and no tribute post. Just Lillard finding out along with all the fans on social media.

In lieu of a proper goodbye for a consummate professional who gave the team everything he had before bad injury luck reared its ugly head, it was just a cold, silent cut. Mainstream media has begun the usual circus of interrogating what this might mean for Giannis Antetokounmpo's future. And now, the question is simple: what’s next for the nine-time All-Star?

The only correct answer might be even simpler: Portland.

For all the chaos surrounding Dame’s one-year stint in Milwaukee -- the injuries, the awkward fit, and the two early playoff exits at the hands of the Indiana Pacers -- one obvious truth has remained clear: his heart never really left home. And that's okay.

The writing has long been on the wall about Damian Lillard's next team after Milwaukee

It wasn’t just the trade demand saga. It was the follow-up interviews where Lillard admitted how much being away from his kids and family in Portland had worn on him. Even during his Bucks rehab stint, Dame specifically asked to recover in Portland, not Milwaukee. After over a decade with the Trail Blazers organization, it was clear he had built a home there. And he was homesick.

"Being away from my kids is tough. In Portland, my life was set up. My mom was down the street; my brother was the other way down the street. My sister was down the street. My kids in school. Just my whole life was set up perfectly right there," Lillard was quoted as saying in an interview with Sports Illustrated last year. "It was a great situation. So just leaving that behind alone is a lot."

Now that he’s a free agent, the cleanest path forward is also the most poetic. A return to Rip City. Not as the franchise savior this time, and not as the focal point, but as the steady veteran presence alongside a young Blazers core that needs guidance and spacing. What's waiting for him now if he decides to make the move is a situation where there is no pressure to contend, no need to play hero ball to win games, just a reunion that feels right.

For Portland, the move makes sense too. Their young pieces still need a veteran on the floor and an adult in the locker room, and adding Dame means buying time for them to keep growing. A Lillard return to Rip City would mean reconnecting the franchise with its most loyal star, while helping a young roster grow under less scrutiny.

There are other teams that could make a pitch for Dame, of course. In this league, there's never a shortage of contenders looking for microwave scoring or veteran leadership. But when you look at fit, familiarity, and motivation, no destination is as obvious as the one he left.

Dame returning to Portland won’t make headlines like the original split, but it would be just as meaningful. Now that he's likely in the twilight years of his career, it just might be the quiet, perfect ending this saga always needed. Once you're through laying all your cards on the table, sometimes, going home is the obvious choice.
