The Milwaukee Bucks have surfaced as a D'Angelo Russell trade suitor in recent days, as reported by HoopsHype's Michael Scotto. However, any thought of Russell landing in the 414 was short-lived. Per NBA insider Marc Stein (subscription required), the Bucks were only interested in trading for Russell if he declined his player option for next season to return on a minimum contract.
That wasn't something he was willing to do, Stein says.
Bucks unlikely to get D'Angelo Russell before NBA Trade Deadline
It's not shocking that Russell isn't jumping to decline his option. He's currently logging a career-low 19 minutes per game, and his production reflects it. Why would he decline his option and leave any money on the table when his market will be incredibly dry in the summer? It makes plenty of sense that he wants to hold that player option (worth $6 million) tightly.
Perhaps Russell's stance would have been different if the Milwaukee Bucks were firmly in contention, as he'd have a golden opportunity to prove himself on a contender and possibly earn a raise. Yet, the Bucks are slipping in the standings more and more every day as Giannis Antetokounmpo remains out of the lineup and trade rumors grow more intense.
Even if Russell is unwilling to waive his option, trading for the guard is at least worth exploring, though under one strict condition. If the Dallas Mavericks are willing to send Milwaukee draft capital to absorb Russell's contract in exchange for expiring deals, it could be a worthwhile move. Milwaukee's asset cupboard is dry, so a second-round pick or two could be very useful in future moves.
Milwaukee's backcourt could use a lift right now as Kevin Porter Jr. remains out due to injury, and a former All-Star like Russell could be a low-risk addition to help fill the gap for now.
Between Russell and Brooklyn's Cam Thomas, Scotto reported that the Milwaukee Bucks are looking around for high-upside players or those with less-than-ideal contracts to trade for. If the Bucks can get a potential-filled name or some draft capital for a small-scale contract no one wants, it could be worth exploring as they look to retool for next season.
There are still a handful of days left before the NBA Trade Deadline. No doors have officially been shut just yet, but unless the Bucks or Russell cave, a deal feels unlikely.
