Doc Rivers might not be out of the Bucks' hair just yet

Not out of the woods yet.

The Milwaukee Bucks may have moved on from Doc Rivers as head coach with a potential replacement already likely in the works, but as it turns out, they might not be moving on from Doc Rivers entirely just yet.

Per a recent report by Eric Nehm and Sam Amick of The Athletic (subscription required), there are ongoing discussions about "another role moving forward" for Rivers within the organization. Nothing is finalized, and Rivers himself is reportedly leaning toward taking a break. But the fact that talks are happening at all says a lot.

Doc Rivers isn't totally out of the Milwaukee Bucks organization just yet

When a coach steps down after years of a dysfunctional system and a clear ceiling, the assumption is a clean break to rebuild and find another voice to bring the organization forward.

Instead, the Bucks seem open to keeping Rivers in the building in some capacity. That makes things a little complicated going forward, especially in light of the tensions that were building up in the locker room.

On one hand, Rivers brings experience, influence, and a voice that (for some reason) admittedly still carries weight in league circles. It was he, for example, who brought over Rajon Rondo as an assistant coach, which in turn led to the development of guys like Ryan Rollins.

There’s value that fans absolutely have to acknowledge in that, especially for a front office trying to stabilize after another early playoff exit. So keeping him could, in theory, preserve institutional knowledge on the backend without putting him back in the coaches' room.

If this summer is truly shaping up to be the start of a rebuild, then what the organization needs right now is a different identity, a different voice, and a different approach.

If the goal is to build something new, keeping the same figure in the background could undercut that when Rivers represents the entire era that Milwaukee is supposedly moving forward from. His presence, even in a reduced role, invites questions about influence, about decision-making, about whether the franchise is truly embracing change.

It also sends a message, intentional or not, about accountability.

The Bucks didn’t fall short because of one person, of course. But Rivers was a central figure in a season that never fully clicked. Retaining him in any capacity risks looking like the organization isn’t fully willing to confront what went wrong, and will signal that ownership will still always have its way.

The Bucks' talks with Doc Rivers are still just talks, at least for now

At the same time, this could just be due diligence. Conversations don’t always lead to outcomes. Rivers taking a break remains the most likely scenario, especially after the grind of the season. And if that happens, this becomes a footnote.

But until it’s resolved, the situation lingers. Things change but also stay the same.

The Bucks are at a crossroads. Coaching, roster construction, Giannis’ future, everything is in flux. This is a moment that calls for clarity and direction. Fans deserve finality on whether or not a figure as pivotal as Rivers is staying in town or not.

Keeping Doc Rivers around, even in theory, doesn’t exactly provide that direction. It's time for a hard reset from top to bottom to keep this ship afloat if they want to get out of the hole that they've dug themselves into.
