Taurean Prince cannot be the lone true small forward on the Milwaukee Bucks this coming season. With a little wiggle room left, the front office should be on the hunt for a small forward to round out their retooled roster, and one name worth doing some due diligence on is Amir Coffey, the former Clipper who is still on the hunt for his next home.
Coffey would fit in with Milwaukee's "youth movement"
The Bucks know that youth is all the rage in today's NBA. It's why they made such moves as letting Brook Lopez walk while adding Myles Turner and bringing back Kevin Porter Jr., Gary Trent Jr., and Ryan Rollins. At 28 with six years of NBA experience under his belt, Coffey isn't some hidden gem looking to blossom, but he is still a young, solid role player coming off arguably his best season.
In 72 regular season appearances this past year, he averaged 9.7 points (career-high), 2.2 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 40.9 percent from deep. Perimeter shooting has always been one of Coffey's greatest strengths, and teams like the Milwaukee Bucks can always use more of that off the bench - everyone knows how much Giannis Antetokounmpo loves his floor spacing.
Defensively, the flashes are there. Using his 6-foot-7 stature, Coffey has shown a knack for being able to cycle between matchups and make all of them difficult. However, plenty of lapses have also come with that. It's likely one of the reasons why the LA Clippers are apparently fine with letting him walk in free agency. He could earn himself a lot of money by working on this flaw.
On a minimum deal, Coffey would be a fine pickup. Whether it's to be a depth piece or to challenge Taurean Prince for playing time, the Milwaukee Bucks could use another true small forward on their roster before next season begins. Coffey would be a clear-cut low-risk, high-reward move to beef up the rotation.
Adding to Coffey's desirability is the current small forward free agent market, which is as dry as the desert. Aside from Caleb Houstan, another desirable youngster, there aren't many options who fit in with Milwaukee's recent youth-based moves. Either of these two young forwards would make plenty of sense for the Milwaukee Bucks in this regard, making them worthwhile targets to explore.
