For a Milwaukee Bucks team that would love to keep Giannis Antetokounmpo, things are starting to look bleak. Insiders have been dropping updates on the situation from Giannis' perspective, but now, the team's potential point of view is coming to light. Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel revealed the latest on an episode of the Milwaukee Bucks Point Forward Podcast.
"They're in this spot of, 'Which way are we going?' And I don't think, JR, that the spot is, 'Which way are we going with Giannis?' I think the spot is, 'Which way are we going without him?' "
This tidbit is particularly important because it comes from Owczarski. This isn't The Athletic's Sam Amick or ESPN's Shams Charania, who are undoubtedly quality insiders but aren't as dialed in with what is happening in Milwaukee as someone who, well, is in Milwaukee. Close to the situation, what Owczarski said holds extra weight, and in this case, it's tough to stomach.
Giannis era could very well soon end
For weeks, all of the chatter has been about Giannis. What does he want to do? Where does he want to go? There hasn't been much on Milwaukee's end, largely because everyone knows they would like to keep their homegrown star. However, it sounds like they might be coming to the realization that the odds of that happening are slim.
The door to Giannis returning hasn't been slammed shut entirely, but the situation is growing uglier by the day. Everything hinges on what Giannis wants to do over the next few weeks. Publicly, he was very vague about his future when asked this past season. Maybe he'd stay. Maybe he'd go. There must be none of that this summer. His feelings must be made clear, and the Bucks must respond accordingly.
If he truly does want to seek greener pastures, the Milwaukee Bucks must shift their focus to finding the best possible trade return.
Bucks' next steps are crystal clear
If Giannis does indeed put his foot down and ask the Bucks for a trade, Milwaukee will be in contact with Boston and Miami, two teams seemingly leading the chase for Antetokounmpo.
Both teams have valuable packages to offer the Bucks, with Boston's centered on Jaylen Brown, who could be flipped for more assets, and the Heat offering an array of talented young players. Both have their positives and negatives, but as Owczarski said, the Milwaukee Bucks will have to determine which direction they are headed without Antetokounmpo and execute their vision accordingly.
For the moment, Miami appears to be the leading suitor, given just how determined—some would dare to call it desperate—they seem to want Giannis. It's almost admirable. Their package has the makings to be solid, helping the Milwaukee Bucks kick off their rebuild with talented young players and an array of draft picks.
Milwaukee could endure significant changes in the coming weeks, but only if Giannis finally makes his feelings clear. The Milwaukee Bucks don't want it to end this way, but they are clearly preparing.
