Speculation over Giannis Antetokounmpo’s potential trade status has been the NBA’s biggest story of the last week, and the Greek Freak is letting it run rampant. Giannis could reduce the uncertainty around his situation by committing to either a trade request or staying with the team. Instead, he is allowing the threat of his trade request to create a confusing dilemma for the Bucks and other teams.
Giannis can change everything with a statement
For another superstar comparison, we can look at Denver’s Nikola Jokic. In October, Jokic declared that he wants to “be a Nugget forever” after turning down a contract extension. He quickly shut down any rumors about his displeasure with the team through that simple phrase.
On the other hand, Giannis has been noncommittal to the Bucks for years. Sure, this can motivate his teammates to play better and the front office to maximize the team’s title chances now. But it can also be a huge distraction for the organization. Every Buck is now acutely aware that their entire season outlook could change soon, depending on Giannis’ feelings.
It also doesn’t help that Giannis isn’t on the court right now. His injury obviously leaves a gaping void on the team and overtaxes his teammates. Many are already playing roles beyond their usual skill set. Adding the pressure of looming trade speculation doesn’t help their play at all.
For the front office, it’s an even trickier situation. They would probably prefer to keep Giannis on the team, so they may try to make some win-now moves. But it’s difficult to trade away young/future talent with no commitment from their superstar. At the same time, they must begin preliminary trade negotiations so they don’t get fleeced if a sudden trade request comes up.
Even a clear trade request would make the waters less murky for the Bucks. They could begin the process of fielding Giannis trade packages and entering a rebuild after him. But doing so without his explicit ask seems like a no-go. With his role in franchise history, the Bucks are almost required to give Giannis whatever he wants - even when he’s leaving their team.
Hopefully Giannis can come to a final decision soon. Regardless of the outcome, his choice will give the Bucks a clear direction for the rest of this season. Giannis clearly isn’t happy with how the Bucks' season has unfolded so far, but he’s further handicapping the team by letting rumors circulate without any definitive stance.
The Bucks haven’t given Giannis everything he asked for, as the Nuggets have with Jokic. But Giannis still needs to firmly pick a direction for the sake of everyone involved.
