Giannis learning Miami isn't so different from Milwaukee in painful way

It seems like the Heat must trade for top players rather than sign them via free agency.

It certainly wasn't the sole reason, but it wouldn't be surprising if one of the factors that played into Giannis Antetokounmpo leaving the Milwaukee Bucks was the idea of a better recruiting pitch. Yes, playing in Miami might be more desirable for players than Milwaukee, but it would be hard to tell after seeing how unsuccessful the Heat have been with their recruiting this offseason.

Heat haven't done much to build around Giannis

The Heat have been linked to some big names this summer. Yet, to this point, they've come away with none of them. Bradley Beal returned to the LA Clippers. Russell Westbrook retired. Khris Middleton dodged a Giannis reunion for Washington. Despite getting a buyout, DeMar DeRozan hasn't rushed to join the Heat. Klay Thompson hasn't pressed the Mavericks for a buyout to race to Miami.

Even with Giannis Antetokounmpo in town, Miami isn't a free agent hotspot. Warm weather and a lack of state income tax aren't moving the needle. The Heat's biggest offseason splash amid the Giannis trade was signing Tim Hardaway Jr. He's a nice piece, but the thought of teaming up with Giannis and Bam in sunny Florida seemingly isn't enticing free agents like many thought it would.

Giannis is no stranger to this. Milwaukee certainly wasn't a top landing spot in free agency throughout his tenure with the team. That's why the Heat will have to take a page out of the Bucks' book and trade for any roster reinforcements they want to add in the foreseeable future.

Bucks had to give Giannis help in roundabout way

Outside of Brook Lopez, Milwaukee's most impactful additions throughout the Giannis tenure always came via trade. Eric Bledsoe, Jrue Holiday, Damian Lillard, and even P.J. Tucker, who was a crucial cog on the title team, all required sacrificing assets rather than signing them. That's just the name of the game when you're a small-market squad.

If the Heat want to make a splash sooner or later to maximize their new championship window with Giannis in town, all signs point to them following this path. Considering they just traded basically all of their most valuable assets to acquire the Greek Freak, getting anything done is far easier said than done for the Heat. That's why a low-cost piece like Beal or Westbrook would have been desirable.

There is still time for Miami to do something, but right now, their odds of making a roster splash to beef up Giannis' supporting cast aren't exactly looking strong.
