There's no resolution to the ongoing Giannis Antetokounmpo trade saga, but ESPN's Shams Charania thinks there will be one soon enough. It's not one the Milwaukee Bucks will like. Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, Charania said this will likely end in a split, with Giannis putting his foot down and telling the Bucks he wants to play elsewhere.
"Any conversation that the Bucks are going to have with Giannis Antetokounmpo, from my understanding, is going to be a very simple one: 'Do you want to stay here long-term and commit long-term in June?"
"The answer, from all accounts, is going to be 'no.' And at that point, the question is going to be: where does Giannis want to go?"
Giannis' may already be looking elsewhere
Departing Milwaukee has been on Giannis's mind for a while. Some rumors even date his interest in a change of scenery back to last summer. The Bucks' disastrous 2025-26, in which they missed the NBA Playoffs for the first time in a decade, certainly did little to change Giannis' mind about whether this team can contend.
If Charania is correct, he clearly does not think there is a quick road back to contention, either. After a string of first-round exits and missing the playoffs entirely, Giannis is hungry. He wants to get back to the feeling of deep playoff runs. Watching contending teams like the New York Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves, who have interest in him, make deep runs likely has only increased his desire.
Giannis himself has always said he could spend the rest of his career in Milwaukee, but Charania has it sounding like his next chapter might be on the horizon.
Bucks' timeline puts them in a difficult position
As Charania also reported, the Milwaukee Bucks still think they have a shot at keeping their star on the roster. It would take a lot, but the Bucks will be equipped with up to three first-round picks they can throw on the table in trades alongside a handful of hefty contracts. This team has always been one of the more aggressive franchises in trades, and that likely won't change.
Yet, part-owner Jimmy Haslam has said he'd love for the team to get this sorted by the NBA Draft in late June. That doesn't give the Milwaukee Bucks much time to make significant roster upgrades to convince Giannis to stay. In fact, that timeline might make it even more likely that Giannis wants out, given that the Bucks would largely be asking him to take a leap of faith.
Charania said that the Bucks are currently open for business on Giannis trade calls. While that was also the case at the NBA Trade Deadline, it certainly feels like there is more pressure now to make a deal if that is ultimately what Giannis wants. If Haslam gets his wish, this entire situation should be resolved within the next four to six weeks. The end of a historic era could be approaching.
