As trade rumors about his future with the Milwaukee Bucks intensify, Giannis Antetokounmpo sure sounded like someone who wants to stay in his latest social media post.
"Year 13
This has been one of the toughest seasons of my career, but as they say, like a phoenix from the ashes, I’ll rise.
To the city of Milwaukee, MY city, thank you for the unwavering love and support."
Sure, it could be nothing. Throughout this entire trade drama saga, Giannis has always said the right things to the public. However, something about the talk about rising from the ashes of what was one of the Bucks' worst seasons in the Giannis era and referring to Milwaukee as "MY city," stands out. The door for him coming back to the 414 for another go-round is certainly wide open.
Giannis and the Bucks haven't split yet
Despite the chatter, Giannis isn't guaranteed to be traded this summer. While the rumors have never been this prominent, we've heard things about Giannis potentially wanting to play elsewhere during previous summers. Just like they did in the past, the Milwaukee Bucks will look to prove to their star that he doesn't need to be traded elsewhere to contend for a title.
As always, the Greek Freak will likely give Milwaukee a shot to prove that they can make the roster moves and hire a good coach before he ultimately puts his foot down one way or another. While it would make sense to keep Giannis, the Bucks must also remain cautious regarding their stash of future assets, as they need a clear win-now path if they plan on parting with those.
Milwaukee clearly means a lot to Giannis
If it were up to Giannis Antetokounmpo, he'd like to spend the rest of his NBA career competing with the Milwaukee Bucks. He has consistently made that much clear throughout his entire time playing in Milwaukee. The problem is that the Bucks haven't shown an ability to contend over the last handful of years, which have been plagued by first-round exits and even missing the playoffs entirely this year.
Giannis isn't entirely blameless for Milwaukee's woes, but no one could blame him for wanting to get back to winning. He's 31. Father Time is undefeated. If there is no clear path to returning to at least having a shot at winning a playoff series next season, it feels unlikely that Giannis will start the year in a green jersey.
No matter where the two sides currently stand, they need to figure things out quickly. Time is crucial.
