Hawks won't be taken seriously as Giannis trade suitor if rumor holds true

If that prized draft pick is off the table, so is the superstar.

If the Atlanta Hawks were to dangle next summer's first-round pick, which they acquired from New Orleans this past summer, they could become a legitimate Giannis Antetokounmpo suitor. However, currently, the Hawks reportedly won't consider trading that prized pick, knowing its value, per NBA insider Jake Fischer (subscription required). If they won't move it, the Bucks won't take them seriously.

Hawks have arguably the most desirable pick in the NBA

The Hawks will get the most favorable draft pick between New Orleans and Milwaukee next summer. Sitting at 3-20, it's safe to say that the Pelicans' pick will end up incredibly high in the draft order. If the Bucks were to acquire that pick in a Giannis deal and continue slumping this season, they could kick off their rebuild/retool with two high picks in a loaded draft class.

Parting with Giannis would hurt. The team's title chances would plummet immediately, and they would have to embrace a major shift. However, even with Milwaukee's well-documented poor draft record, it would be hard not to find talent in the first round in 2026. They might not be able to contend in the immediate aftermath, but they could set up a foundation.

Of course, no matter how high, it's going to take more than one pick to pry Giannis from Milwaukee, if that is the way things go. The Hawks have more picks to offer and a handful of young players to offer. Bringing Wisconsin native Jalen Johnson back home sounds enticing. Dyson Daniels is a defensive monster. Zaccharie Risacher was the first overall pick a few years back. Atlanta is intriguing.

If that pick is off the table, however, Atlanta's best offer shouldn't even be considered. Including that first-rounder is what could put the Hawks in a different tier of Giannis Antetokounmpo suitors.

It's early. Teams are trying to play hardball as the Bucks test the waters. The Hawks don't want to trade this pick. Per Fischer, the San Antonio Spurs are unwilling to move Stephon Castle or Dylan Harper, two guards the Bucks would almost certainly want in any trade. If negotiations heat up, minds can change in an instant. It all depends on how badly teams want one of the best players in the world.

It's all about the waiting game right now. It's not set in stone that Giannis will ask out, but where there is smoke, there is absolutely fire.
