Boston's emerging as a serious Giannis suitor, and just like that, the Miami Heat just got handed their worst-case scenario. And it should absolutely light a fire under Pat Riley to go all-in on landing Giannis Antetokounmpo this summer.
According to a recent article by The Athletic NBA insider Sam Amick (subscription required), there is interest in Antetokounmpo on Boston's end.
"Even the Celtics, who have the 'Two Jays' back now and look fully capable of winning it all, are known to be interested and discussed in league circles as potential suitors."
To recall, Miami very nearly landed Antetokounmpo ahead of the trade deadline after offering a package of Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, other players, and multiple draft picks. ESPN's Shams Charania reported recently that the Milwaukee Bucks were seriously interested in taking it but ultimately declined the deal.
Giannis to the Celtics would close the Eastern Conference window
The Miami Heat did not make any trades at the 2026 NBA Trade Deadline, becoming the only team in the Eastern Conference to remain inactive.
That right there is Miami's nightmare. Not just missing out on Giannis after chasing him for so long, but watching him go to the team that's been one of their biggest obstacles in the East for years. The Celtics adding a two-time MVP to Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown doesn't just close Miami's championship window; it welds it shut permanently.
Letting Giannis go to a rival like Boston would be an organizational disaster for the Heat. They've positioned themselves as the destination for disgruntled superstars, built their entire identity around being one piece away from contention. Losing Giannis to the Celtics proves that strategy doesn't work anymore.
Miami should be looking to land the piece that might stop them from getting out of the East, and that piece is Giannis. If Boston gets him instead, the Heat are staring at years of getting bounced by a Celtics superteam that's impossible to match.
Miami needs to be urgent in Giannis talks
The urgency should be off the charts for Riley right now. It's not just about adding Giannis to Miami anymore; it's about preventing him from going to Boston and making the entire conference unwinnable. Every asset the Heat have should be on the table if it means keeping Giannis away from the Celtics.
Boston entering the conversation also validates recent reports that Giannis is actually available and has been for a while. Teams don't get "discussed in league circles" as suitors unless there's genuine belief the trade is happening. The Celtics wouldn't waste time exploring a Giannis deal if they didn't think Milwaukee was actually ready to move him.
For the Heat, this is win-or-go-home territory. Land Giannis, and you're instantly up there among the favorites to win the East. Miss out to Boston and you're looking at a five-year stretch of getting destroyed by a team that's already better than you before adding a generational talent.
Riley has made his career on landing disgruntled superstars. This is the moment that defines whether he can still do it in 2026 or if that era of Heat basketball is over. Boston getting Giannis would be the ultimate indictment of Miami's entire organizational approach.
The nightmare scenario isn't hypothetical anymore. It's real, it's happening, and the Heat need to outbid Boston before it's too late. Everything they've built over the past decade depends on it.
