For several months now, everyone has expected Milwaukee Bucks wing Pat Connaughton to opt into his upcoming player option. Indeed, NBA insider Marc Stein (subscription required) reports that the wing plans to continue his stay in Milwaukee by accepting his $9.4 million option for next season. The decision is due by June 24, but it could really come at any moment. There's no suspense here.
Connaughton's decision is not a shocking one (but what comes next?)
When Pat Connaughton inked his three-year, $28.3 million extension, it was justified. The wing was still playing at a high level and was a high-motor role player. However, in the years since, the veteran has regressed. This past season, Connaughton averaged just 14.7 minutes per game, his fewest since his second NBA season way back in 2016-17.
The reason is that his shooting, rebounding, and defensive prowess have all dipped since Connaughton's heroics in Milwaukee's title run, relegating him to primarily serving as a veteran presence on the bench most nights. Connaughton's personality is undoubtedly valued in the locker room, but veteran presences cannot make $9.4 million per season in today's NBA.
The reality is that the Milwaukee Bucks will almost certainly involve Connaughton in trade discussions all offseason. This team needs to make upgrades, and Connaughton's hefty salary is one of the big contracts they can trade. His name popped up in rumors all throughout last season, so it only makes sense if his name quickly surfaces once again.
There were no takers on Pat Connaughton last season, but that may have partially been because he wasn't on an expiring contract like he will be. Teams knowing they won't have to take him back for multiple seasons makes him more desirable, especially if the Milwaukee Bucks attach draft capital.
With the team out of the second apron and having more flexibility, they have the ability to pair his contract with others, which could lead to a legitimate game-changing move. Only time will tell what big plans general manager Jon Horst has in store as he aims to put a competitive roster around star Giannis Antetokounmpo.
No matter what happens this offseason, Pat Connaughton will always be remembered for his help in the 2021 NBA title run. He was unquestionably a key cog night in and night out for a Bucks team that needed a shot in the arm off the bench.
