After just one NBA season, Kam Jones was traded and cut, putting his dreams in jeopardy. However, not only have his NBA hopes remained intact, but he now gets to pursue them in the city he grew to love amid his very successful college career at Marquette. Speaking after Milwaukee Bucks practice on Thursday, Jones gushed about being back in town. Playing for this city could be what he needs.
"I'm very excited to be back in Milwaukee. I love this city very very much. Very dearly. And happy to be playing for this city again."
Milwaukee ties can offer extra motivation
Being traded by the Indiana Pacers and cut by the Chicago Bulls would have been enough motivation for Kam Jones on its own. However, the opportunity to suit up for the Bucks and return to Milwaukee, where he played for four years as a Golden Eagle, can be a little extra boost. Simply put, if he wants to stick around here, he must seize the opportunity. If he does, this could be his long-term home.
Playing for any other city would be great, but the opportunity to continue building his legacy in Milwaukee has to be beyond desirable to the guard.
For Jones, the blueprint is simple. He needs to approach every practice like it's his last, going at any other players who stand in his way. Unsurprisingly, that's exactly what he's doing, citing during media availability that he is a fierce competitor and is willing to do whatever is asked of him to make his mark with the Milwaukee Bucks. If the attitude translates to productivity, the mission will be accomplished.
Jones' journey will likely start in Oshkosh
While Taylor Jenkins is still assessing the roster and crafting what will be his rotations, Jones' odds of being a steady contributor from day one next season are slim. On a two-way contract, that should not come as much of a surprise. Unless the team needs another guard for any reason, Jones will likely be in the G League with the Wisconsin Herd for a good chunk of the season.
It shouldn't be viewed as a demotion. It could actually be a good thing. In Oshkosh, Jones will have an opportunity to spread his wings, unlike with the Milwaukee Bucks. If he dazzles there, the Bucks could very well look to promote him, as they've done with several others over the years. It won't be an easy task, but if Jones wants to truly be with the Bucks long-term, this is a great starting point.
For now, all he can do is keep practicing hard. For him, that won't be a problem.
